Anybody know about Artane?

Posted by DanielJ on October 15, 2003, at 13:34:11

My son is taking 20 mg Zyprexa and the Dr added Artane to counteract side effects of this. He is taking 5 mg. of artane twice a day. Does anyone know if Artane itself has side effects and is there a specific dose required in proportion to anti-Psy med.. What side effects does it cancel out?

Artane is an anticholinergic med. It treats symptoms of parkinsonism such as muscle stiffness, shuffling gait, and tremor. I take Cogentin, which is in the same class of meds.

I have read that unexpectedly severe side effects from antipsychotic meds sometimes indicates a neurological or medical problem. I highly recommend a thorough neurological evaluation, especially if someone gets severe side effects from the meds.

My sons psychotic symptoms were physical as well as mental. Assuming rigid postures, making strange faces, walking backwards, awkward gestures etc. After he had his first panic attack he picked up a tic where he put his hand up near his mouth and acted as if he was choking. After 3 weeks on 20mg zyprexa (up from 10mg) and 100 mg Zoloft (up from 50 mg) It has all disappeared except for an occasional 2-3 second breakthrough. I wondered if Artane is necessary as well as safe for continued treatment which he will need. We also were getting ready to go through a Neuro exam for him but his Psy Dr. postponed it because of his great improvement on the medications.

Do high levels of dopamine cause sycosis?Does dopamine stop working when it reachs a certain level in the brain.I belive it does. This would explain the rigid posture as you need dopamine to move.Dopamine is needed in order to gate the external world. You will go nuts without it.everything will be a danger to you.I would really get on the fish oil and see if it helps.A cat parasite may cause one form of schizophrenia.Calcium disregulation is at the heart of manic depression.

Thanks xjs an Ron,
Since Zyprexa and Zoloft seem to have good track records as far as long term use go, I am mainly on the trail of investigating the SE long term safety record of Artane. I didn't like what I read about Atropine like toxicity. My son doesn't really have any Parkinson like tremors, just positive psychotic symptoms. They are leaning toward schizophrenia in their long term diag. but his psy Dr. says that kind of diag doesn't help anyone much. He says he treats psychotic symptoms, depression and anxiety etc. Many medication plans cross over into to other illnesses where similar symptoms occur. This makes a lot of sense to me.
Also I have heard a lot of good things about fish oil and b vitamins.
