opiates for depression?

Posted by pink123 on August 19, 2003, at 20:30:23

I noticed, after taking a Percocet, that my depression lifted slightly. Does anyone know anything about this? Do other people experience depression relief from opiates?

I didn't experience the "usual" effects from the Percocet, like feeling "high," spacey, "zoned, "out of it," or tired. It just sort of made me feel normal.

Is there any validity to this?

There are quite a few people for whom the more unorthodox treatments for depression (i.e. amphetamines and opioids) are the only ones that work. I'm one of those people -- I take Ultram (a narcotic pain reliever similar, IMO, to a combination of Vicodin and Anafranil, minus the side effects) for depression and OCD. I also take Xanax XR, Klonopin, and Dexedrine Spansules. I've found that almost any opioid helps with my depression (except codeine -- too weak), but Ultram so far has been the only one to also help my OCD.

There has been quite a bit of research done involving the use of opioid painkillers in treatment of depression (particularly buprenorphine, morphine, and Ultram), and the results of this research pretty much always indicates that they are extremely useful. So, that should answer your question regarding validity.

Any questions relating to psychiatric use of opioids you have, or anything else for that matter, go right and ask. :-)

I've never had a problem with opiates, but I do find occasional use mood-lifting, almost like a "reset" when I'm down. I've had a couple of instances in the last few years involving tooth problems or muscle strain for which I've been prescribed Vicoprophen (like Vicodin, except it's ibuprophen + hydrocodone, because I've never been able to tolerate acetominophen due to stomach upset).

I definitely find that Vicoprophen improves my mood, even at a purely therapeutic dose. And, the effects seem to last a couple of days. I've actually thought of asking my pdoc for a small prescription, but somehow I doubt he'd go for it. Who knows, though -- I may ask on my next visit. I expect he'll just smile and say, yes, I know it works, but it's too risky to prescribe. He's very open-minded, but also alert to the often-excessive constraints imposed by the FDA (+/or DEA). At least he's honest about these things.

Hiya pink :-) yep~~I just posted to *howdy* about this. Whenever I took an opiate for surgeries I've had or for migraines, I always got hooked, I felt ooooooooo so great! I know some people that get deathly ill and vomit if they take narcotics or opiates, etc.
I will do a search and if I come up with anything I will let you know:-)if you want????
I want to know too!
