Effexor Alcohol

Posted by Timbuk2 on July 30, 2003, at 22:20:39

I have been on Effexor XR for 4 years now and have made many adjustments whith out the help of my Doc (cause he's more messed up than I am)

My second serious bout was about two years ago, when i decided that I was better and didn't need to be on any AD's anymore. 2 months passed and had been feeling good. Was at a party and had a few too many drinks. (not falling down drunk...just over did it) Woke up with massive headache the next AM. I couldn't move for almost a day. Next day I felt a bit better, but had a shakey feeling all over. Next day.......full blown Depression again!
Back on Effexor 75...then 150....then 225, and after weeks I was starting to feel better. Except this time, I inherited Anxiety! Felt good, but the anxiety was killing me. I tried lowering my dose slowly (once i was stable again) and got down to 75mg and 37.5mg daily. Felt great! Still had anxiety though???
Oh well......I was going to see a new pdoc and try to rectify that.
This past week-end, I had a few too many drinks again (wine) and woke up with Full blown depression again! @#$!#$ I'm back up to 150mg and will see what my new Doc. says. Mayby it's time for a change in meds? I know that I can never ever go off any AD again, as this comes on with absolutly no reason! I am only 37 years old, have the most wonderfull supportive wife and two beautiful daughters Age 8 and 10! We own a very nice home and everything should be great!

But BANG! Hopefully after a few week's I'll be getting some of my drive back.
I am no longer a drinker though! I never really drank much anyway. Only if a few friends got together we'd have a few once or twice a month.

Sorry for the long drawn out post, but if any one has had a similar experience, it would love to hear how you coped?

God Bless you all!

Tim

I've read, and pretty much experienced, that 1 night of drinking on Effexor with give you 1-3 days of life without AD benefits. We aren't talking hangover. We're talking self-doubts, shame, feelings of worthlessness, etc. Plus, haven't been able to feel a buzz while taking effexor. No happy drinking there.

Taper off slowly when/if you quit Effexor.
