Paging Larry: DLPA to supplement my tramadol?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on July 13, 2003, at 17:36:01

I noticed in a thread above that you mentioned DLPA's possibility for preventing opioid tolerance and increasing analgesia. I've been taking tramadol for the past week or so now with miraculous results... I know it's a very unconventional opioid, but do you think supplementing with DLPA may help assure that its effects last? Thanks!

I don't know about dl-phenylalanine, but there is a drug named memantine that is supposed to mitigate opioid tolerance. It is closely related to amantadine, and like amantadine, blocks NMDA receptors and is antiglutamatergic. Memantine is available now in Germany, and will probably be approved in the US soon for Alzheimer's Dementia. Another possibility might be acamprosate (Campral). It is also antiglutamatergic.

Hopefully, you won't need anything else.

How does tramadol affect you? Does it help with depression?

Thanks for the info on NMDA antagonism... I seem to recall that dextromethorphan is an NMDA antagonist. I wonder if it's possible that DXM, taken in normal therapeutic doses, could achieve the same effect? More importantly, I wonder if chronic administration in this fassion could be dangerous (i.e. Olney's lesions)?

Re: my experience thusfar with tramadol, yes, it has helped remarkably with my depression. It also seems to be improving the quality of my sleep, and has decreased my anxiety even further. But perhaps the most welcome effect is the complete relief of OCD symptoms that I've had since my first dose. No more counting words and letters, no more compulsive checking to make sure I'm not stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk, lol. I'll keep you updated.

AmeSansVie:
I'm glad to hear that you also have remarkable results with tramadol. I also have (had, because I've just run out of it, and had it Rxed for my cut wounds) great results combining it with Klonopin. It removed most of my depression, eliminated social anxiety and overally I've felt great with using 100 mg tramadol + 1.5 mg Klonopin.
Maybe you could try using Xyrem (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) to increase dopamine and thus increase further Tramadol results? Although I've seen few studies which showed that Tramadol affects mostly serotonine and norepinephrine (reuptake inhibitor). But who knows :)
Take care,
Brad

I think your resutls are fabulous. I'm really happy that you've found something so useful.

I can't predict if using DLPA will extend the effects of tramadol, but it is certainly reasonable to give it a try. It can't hurt you to add DLPA, as far as I understand the effects.

With respect to DXM, I think tramadol and DXM are not too different in molecular structure, but I'm going on memory (I might be wrong). I think Olney's lesions are unlikely if you keep the dose down, and take "holidays" from using it.

Gotta go,
Lar
