I watched it, and I disagree. They presented a very compelling case against the manufacturer of neurontin. Apparently it's a very good drug--for epilepsy. If what they say is true, there is no evidence it has any effect for bipolar disorder. Papers to the contrary were falsified, etc.

If it's true, I will be vindicated. I was put on neurontin a few years ago, and my personality changed to such a degree that I ended up being discharged from my treatment at UCLA against my will, and no one would listen after I stopped the neurontin, came out of my psychosis or whatever it was, untreated mania, i dunno.. and tried to go back and explain.

Hey-I missed it! Dang it-I was put on neurontin for about a month and it didn't seem to do much for me-except that I was feeling a little more stabilized. My doc took me off it though-that's what I don't understand. What did the show talk about concerning it?? Please share with me.

Thank you
Gal

Wow,

I love my Neurontin. I take 600mg before bed to combat bruxism (grinding teeth) and Restless Legs Syndrome. Neurontin also seems to enhance my mood in a very sublte but lovely way.

I just thought I'd ad my 2 centavos...

Blessings,
Simcha

Neurontin does have an effect or is it affect~
Anyway there's the proof - makes me dumb.

Seriously it helps...my silly posting here has reduced dramatically.

I take 300mg at night for restless legs. It is wonderful.

Gee - That's an off-label use, isn't it??

I agree that the company was doing bad things. Some people were hurt by taking Neurontin instead of something else (but since our meds don't work for everyone, doctors should be monitoring what is working and what isn't. Blaming Neurontin for a suicide attempt seems inappropriate. Should I have blamed Parnate for my last injury attempt?)

I hope that this publicity doesn't hurt Neurontin. There are some areas where it is cleary a good drug.

I know of three cases, personally, where Neurontin has been helpful:

1. Uncle coming off an adiction to Valium and Lortab took it for pain and symptoms of bi-polar.
2. Another uncle took it after back surgery for pain.
3. My dad took if for chronic hiccups following a sever stroke.

Worked well in all three cases.

Well, their marketing practices were most certainly unethical, but I definitely agree that Neurontin has a wide range of applications. I just hope this doesn't hurt Pfizer as far as the release of pregabalin goes... I'm really looking forward to that drug.

Hi simcha! Wow, I took Neurontin for a while-do you really believe that it helps with your RLS??? I've got that-and I have yet to find something that works. It started recently since I have been on Topamax and underwent a complete medicaation change in May. From what I understood also, Neurontin helps with pain in some too? When I was on it, I also noticed a very subtle change, not a big one-thats maybe why my doctor took me off it-do you think it would be something to ask my doctor to put me back on again?? Any comments from anyone would be so much appreciated!
Would like to discuss more. (Thanks for your2 centavos;)
Thanks so much,

Gal

ya know.....if Neurontin works for Restless Legs-they need to make it an on-label use for that-I think. Don't you? RLS is annoying and very maddening. I'm glad it works for you because I need to talk to my doctor about getting some help for mine. I lay in bed at night-and this is after I take my night meds-I just move my legs CONSTANTLY-FAST like I'm one ancy girl!!!! Just ancy-anxious and like I could run a race-not so much anxious just ancy like I have to move my legs-I don't know any other way to describe it It's really getting annoying.
Any suggestions out there? :(

Thanks,Gal

If you haven't tried Klonopin for your RLS, that's a very good one. But nowadays, the trend seems to be more toward using dopamine agonists for RLS, and they work quite well for that. I've heard of Mirapex, Requip, Dostinex, and Parlodel being used for it.

My RLS is a side effect from one of my other meds (maybe the Prozac?). I don't remember when started, but I think that the Neurontin fixed it right away. There are some nights when I have to take a second 300mg, or a prescription NSAID to get to sleep.

Mine are a little different from yours. I lie nice and still and then one leg will jump. If I hold it down and don't let it jump, it will drive me crazy until I let it jump. Stretching the muscles doesn't help. If my legs start going it doesn't matter how tired I am, nor how many sleep inducing drugs I have taken - I'm not sleeping until I've medicated the RLS.

It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it completely prevents sleep.

Good luck!!!!!

fallsfall, thanks-it does sound like yours is a little different then mine-maybe I AM just anxious who knows. LOL It's hard to accept and deal with sometimes when we think that one med may be causing side effects like RLS or even anxiety. My old psychiatrist was giving my Halcion for sleep when I was hospitalized a while back and I still have some left so I may try that tonight. Hopefully it will work. Thanks so much for your input.

I'm on 2mg Klonopin for sleep now and it doesn't seem to do much anymore for me as far as this leg thing goes:( It may be just plain anxiety or stress. I am going to try some Halcion my doc gave me a while back I had left over. Have you ever tried that? It's just so annoying. Maybe it's just stress.
Thanks for your help

The Neurontin does help keep me level (I'm diagnosed bipolar one with mixed states). It also has a mild AD affect. I know that sounds contradictory, but it is best described as a calming AD feeling. I can't tolerate any other mood stabilizer. They all make me feel edgy. The neurontin lessons my anxiety as well. I wish the media would give it a rest. There are many negatives and positives about most meds out there, some more than others, but if researched enough, the facts can be swayed in either a pro or con direction on just about any of them.
