Not sure about this Freedom...depends on the person. For many OCD'ers can make them much worse.

I think your sports idea is great, but I'm sure if thid would have even an inderect influence on OCD, other than just distraction from the thoughts. I've been meaning to ask this a long time: what other drugs have you tried besides prozac?

Take Care mate,
Ace.

Hi, long time no see, buddy.

What do you mean for others it can make them much worse?

I've tried anafranil and paroxetine.

Although i have quite odd neurology, and can scarcely be taken as a model for what might work...

I use Lamictal and Keppra, and Inversine PRN, and after i finally got my Keppra up to the dose i need to be taking (1500mg twice daily) i experienced some remission of Tourette's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

And LOTS of exercise, LOL, it does cause release of endorphins, serotonin, some other good stuff, and it decreases levels of noradrenaline... pretty good for OCD, i experience an increase in symptoms within a day or two if i can't get out walking for at least two hours every day.

It made me MUCH worse. To me I was scratching a wound (the OCD). In my opinion words can't heal broken legs or broken brains (chemical imbalances) . Just my opinion.

Take Care OCD man,
Ace.

nice to hear that your OCD seems to be under good control.

Swimming is great exercise therapy for OCD, it shackles your whole body, refreshes you completely with water etc. But after swimming, one needs to take some good non-junk food for energy lost.

Can you tell me what did you take that make your OCD much worse? I would appreciate if you share your knowledge with us.

I remembered that during my college years, when I was taking plenty of Vitamin C and Calcium supplements, I had a complete remission of OCD symptoms. I also read that calcium deficiency may be implicated in OCD.

So could nutritional deficiency be one of the causes of OCD? I highly suspect so.

Perhaps what made you worse was too high of an intake of zinc? Zinc acts as an allosteric negative modulator of GABA receptors, among it's many other neurological effects--in otherwords, it limits the effect that stimulation of GABA receptors will have. Several drugs used to treat OCD, including Depakote, clonazepam, and Keppra, reverse this particular effect of zinc. An increase in copper (through dietary sources, supplemental copper is fairly dangerous--blackstrap molasses is a rich source, as are avocados and chocolate, probably a lot of others as well, i'm not sure... and citrus fruits increase copper absorption.

As regards words fixing broken brains--one must remember that fMRI studies have proven that different types of thoughts produce different areas of greater or lesser activation in the brain, so CBT has laboratory back-up as well as a great deal of clinical back-up as a potentially successful technique for helping to re-establish more normal brain function.

A lot of times, i wonder just how much the chemical imbalance theory has worked against psychiatric patients... i mean, it has obviously worked for us, as regards the stigma of mental illness, but i wonder just how much of a negative placebo effect it has caused--a reversal through belief of something that might otherwise help--because so many people think that, because the problem is biological, it cannot be helped with behavioural therapies. It would seem quite obvious to me that if the biology is producing aberrant behaviour/emotions, it could work both ways... modification of behaviour/emotions could produce a modification of aberrant biology.

My 2 cents on the matter, anyway.

But from what I have read, zinc seems to help OCD. Or does higher intakes of zinc worsens OCD?

"Generally, OCD patients respond nicely to methonine, SAMe, calcium, magnesium, B-6, Inositol, TMG, and zinc. Most OCD patients get worse if given supplements of DMAE, choline, copper, or folic acid.

I am battling depression...in Jan.03, I had to have a double masctemony. I was fine with this until my oncologolist put me on armidex, to get rid of any hormones my body would make....I took this from Feb through April, then quit when I realized it was causing depression, I had been on Celexa 10 mg. for 2 years because of a similar incident. My GP put me on 20 mg of lexepro. My question is.Is this too much? when should I get some relief? I have been on it only 5 days.

From monitoring posts here, I would say most people start out at lower dosage, I started at 5mg, some even start at 2.5mg. Initial SE's can be severe for some, cutting down on dosage sometimes helps w/SE's. SE's can last as long as 4-6 weeks, but others have no SE's or very minor ones. Literature says it may take 6-8 weeks to feel *benefits*, that's how long it took for me. Best of Luck to you!~~~8|8
