SKIPPING MEDS-A LITTLE SCARED........PLS HELP

Posted by galkeepinon on July 8, 2003, at 22:49:09

I haven't taken my Effexor in about 3 days and I had been taking my Topamax 2x a day. In all honestly, I have been forgetting. Tonight I am feeling really sick. My concern is, is it feasible to double up my Topamax tonight to make up for the missed doages and start back on the regular 100mg in the am and 100mg in the pm schedule tomorrow?
I have had a bad headache all day, Tylenol didn't cut it, I've been depressed, and I am getting heat flashes-type sensations:( I'm kind of scared. I also started a Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc supplement 2 days ago, and wonder if my body is trying to get used to that. Any feedback would be appreciated, I'm really scared, I just don't feel right.
Please help with any suggestions.
Thanks

Gal

For Topamax, if you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. This is generally the rule for most medications. I don't think it is advisable to double up on doses.

Effexor really screwed me up if I missed a dose, that is why I switched to Lexapro. The supplement shouldn't affect you noticably, but it might be good to take it with food. Some people will get an upset stomach.

Best advise is to find a good schedule and stick to it. You will avoid a lot of problems this way.

I would suspect it's the Effexor. Did you run out of it?

Something that helps me with multiple meds/vitamins, etc., is that I have one of those little grandma vitamin-boxes. It's a small box that is further divided into little boxes that says "Morn" "Noon" "Eve" "Night," etc. That way, if I'm not sure if I took something or not, I can just look in the box -- if it's not there, then I know I took it.

Oh, yes--I have no experience with Topomax, but with Effexor, missing a dose made me very sick, although I can't even describe the symptoms--all I remember is very bad feeling of malaise.

But I would NOT double up the Effexor. Just take it as soon as you can.

I totally agree with bookgurl - probably the effexor. when i was taking it, i had terrible withdrawal effects if i missed a dose, which was easy to do, as my mind wasn't functioning very clearly at the time ('course, it's not functioning very clearly now either, and i'm not on effexor).

I also agree about the pill boxes. I HAVE to put my pills in a pill box - I only take morning and evening meds, so I have two (different colored) pill boxes that I put my weeks worth of pills in every sunday. It's the ONLY way I can remember to take them, or remember IF I've taken them. I leave the boxes somewhere where I will see them - my nighttime meds are on my bedside table. The daytime meds are downstairs where I have breakfast.

I also had to put a note on my computer monitor that says "did you take your medicine today?" because I would sometimes forget, and I carry a dose of my morning meds with me to work everyday.

Just a few thoughts.

Thank you all so much for your responses (nm)

I agree with this 100%. A pill box is by far the best way to go. I leave it out where I can see it, and will double check it and know immediately if I've taken my pills. Skipping will mess with your system, so you have to find a solution. I missed my pills by 7 hours the other day and was shaky. I take 1800 of trileptal and 200 of lamictal, and was really surprised that I had a physical response.

Hi jlo820,
I started back on Topamax at 200 a day and I already feel better and I went back on the Effexor. I just have to stay on a regular schedule. I found this to be true for me. I forget a lot of the times to stay on a constant schedule with these meds and I just cannot do that, you're so right!
My psychiatrist did mention to me that it would be possible to take 200mg of my Topamax at night. I may ask him about that at my next appointment. Does that seem like a lot to you? Or do patients do that?

Thanks for your help,

Gal

Hi bookgurl, haven't been on in a few days.
I think you were right, I started back on the Effexor yesterday and I already feel better. I forget to take it sometimes and on top of that, my doctor and I did a trial run and took me off it about 2 months ago to see if I really needed it anymore-BIG mistake. I need it! So, I'm back on it to stay. Effexor is a great med for me, and now I know not to go off of it. I am only on 75 mg-not even really a therapeutic dose you think??? WHat is your opinion on that?
I bought a "pill box" so that will definately help.

Thanks so much for your advice.
Hope you're doing well!

Hey,

I'm glad you're doing better.

I've decided, in addition to having my little pill boxes, to start writing down what supplements/meds I'm taking for that month or period of time. That way, if a symptom shows up
or becomes stronger, I may be able to trace it to taking or not taking a particular supplement or med.

books :D

Hi Penny, I think bookgurl was right also-I just posted. I haven't been online in a few days. I felt so sick! It's amazing if you only miss 1 dose how aweful you can feel. Sometimes I think I need the med and some days I don't think I need it because I feel so great. How do we deal with that Penny? Just stay on the meds??
I went back on the Effexor 2 days ago and today I felt a little better-I just hope it continues! Thanks so much for replying.
I also bought a pill box to keep track of my responsibilities with these meds. The Topamax makes my head not function clearly lately hehehe
You have some great ideas about reminding yourself about your meds! The note on your computer monitor is an awesome and creative surefire way-thats great-I may try it.

Thanks for some great ideas Penny!!
Hope you are doing good.
