Lexapro and pregnancy (35 weeks)

Posted by mombear on July 8, 2003, at 19:30:44

Hi,

I am brand new to psycho-babble, and I am looking for information/support as to how to make a decision...

I am a 35 year old mother of a 3 year old beautiful boy. After his birth I had severe post-partum depression and was prescribed Luvox (I bottle fed). I got off the Luvox in July of 2002, and became pregnant January, 2003. I visited my physician today to see about hopefully warding off/lessening any post-partum depression that may occur this time around. He suggested I start taking Lexapro in my 35th week (or maybe a week or two later, depending on if I looked like I might deliver early - first baby was early). He said that, given the severity of my PPD last time, and that the baby would be in the last trimester, the benefits outweighed the risks.
I would like to be in a better frame of mind for this baby than I was able to be for my first, but I don't want to cause any long lasting problems for him!
Has anyone taken Lexapro during their pregnancies? Any thoughts or other things I should ask my doctor? I understand that Lexapro has NOT been clinically studied in pregnant patients, and that mothers who are taking it should not breast feed. However, I cannot find any info on side effects for infants exposed to it in utero.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read my question!

There is a thread above discussing this. I wish you a good pregnancy and a healthy baby.

P.S. I think a large percentage of people post their first message to the wrong board. I did... Welcome

Hi there, I don't understand why he doesn't give you an anti-depressant that has been studied in pregnancy ?

If it were me I'd feel a bit risky taking lexapro whilst pregnant. I think Celexa (Very similar drug) has been given to pregnant women before though.

If you are unsure then maybe it would be better to get a second opinion on the matter.

Good Luck with the new baby!

Thanks to both of you for your quick responses! Good question - why not use something that has had more pregnancy studies?? I will ask that one. Also, I will be seeing my ob-gyn tomorrow (glucose screening, oh joy)and get a second opinion.

Will let you know what they say
Thanks again,

MomBear,

I took zoloft 50 mg my entire pregnancy and while nursing. It has been extensively studied and caused no harm to the fetus/baby. Most studies have been on Prozac and Zoloft so I would give those a try before Lexapro.

I was put on Celexa at 7 months of pregnancy. I did fine and had a healthy baby girl.

Good luck to you!

Hi there,
I don't know about Lexapro but I took Effexor XR 300 mg through my entire pregnancy. My baby girl who is now 16 months seems to be just fine with no abnormalties. In fact she is quite smart for her age. Good luck!

Hello,

I'm by far not a bragging mom but I agree with Nissy...my daughter is well above average for her age. She is my only child (by chose) and she is now 3 1/2 years old. I started Celexa in my 7th month of pregnancy.

Good luck and let us know your decision.
