Safe to combine Wellbutrin with Zoloft??

Posted by KRM123 on July 6, 2003, at 10:38:02

I am currently taking 50mg of Zoloft and 75mg twice a day of Wellbutrin (150mg). Has anyone heard of this combo being unsafe??
I have been on the Zoloft for a month now and on the Wellbutrin for 6 days. The reason I am adding the Wellbutrin is because Zoloft works great but it just messes with my hunger signals. I don't get a full satisfying feeling when eating. I tried Zoloft last year but gained weight and discontinued it. I am hoping the Wellbutrin can help control my cravings and help me to lose weight. I would like to hear from anyone who has had luck with this combo or if there is anything else to help aid weight loss during AD use. Thank you.

I currently take 75 mgs 2x/day of Zoloft and 150 mgs a.m. of Wellbutrin SR. Because Wellbutrin doesn't act on the serotonin levels in your brain, there isn't any problem with combining the two, though individual experiences always vary.

I have found Wellbutrin to be a good boost mood-wise to supplement Zoloft, but I can't say I can tell any difference with appetite.

Good luck.

i take 50mg of zoloft, as well as 100mg of wellbutrin twice a day. been doing this for almost 6 weeks and its been okay. i was having big hunger issues when i started on the zoloft and my pdoc suggested i avoid carbos as much as i can...something about the zoloft works with the carbos to create hunger.......i have no idea why but i have to say when i do cut the carbos, even a bit, the hunger subsides.

btw, i was on wellbutrin first, for about 8 weeks before i started on the zoloft.

hope the combo works for you.

Thanks for your reply Ruby...how long was it before you
noticed that the Wellbutrin was working for you? In March I
started taking 150mg for 3 days then upped it to 300mg...it
was an awful experience, I thought I was going insane. Did
you start at 100mg twice a day?
I hope the Well keeps my hunger at ease. The Well worsens my
anxiety I think and I can't wake up in the morning- real
sedated feeling. I shouldn't give up on it yet though. I
might up the Zoloft to 75mg to help the anxiety- who knows
though- it's just a big guessing game. Let me know how you
are doing...

I use to take Wellbutrin with Fluoxetine, but I had to quit the Fluoxetine. Now I only take the Wellbutrin and it has worked wonders with my anxiety, depression, derealization, and appetite.

I must say that the first week on Wellbutrin SR I had to also take .5mg of Ativan to eliminate some of the agitation. After about a week, I did not experience the agitation.

It's interesting to read that Wellbutrin also makes you sleepy. It now does the same thing to me.

Stick with it, and keep me posted.

God Bless

KRM--

You asked, "how long was it before you
noticed that the Wellbutrin was working for you?" well, um, to be honest i've not been convinced that it has "worked" for me. i think i started on 100, after 4 or 5 days, went up to 150, after 4 0r 5 days went to 200 (100 2x a day), then another 4 or 5 days, went to 150 2x a day......and that was horrendous--tremors, forgetfulness, clumsiness, you name it.

so pdoc put it back to 200...at that time i was taking it with effexor and she had me drop that and start the zoloft. and i've been better on the anxiety after i started the zoloft...but still dealing with pretty awful depression...

i also take trazodone to help with sleep; i've always had insomnia and night terrors and the traz has helped hugely. and about 5 days ago i started on lamictal, so as you can see i'm on quite a cocktail....hoping that if the lamictal works for me i'll be able to come off osme of this other stuff.

and yes, it does seem like a guessing game, but i also think it is a bit of an art on the pdocs part. my pdoc asks a ton of questions--usually spends an hour with me and will return my calls when i get worried about possible side-effects.

thanks for your well wishes.......and some of the same for you. i really hope the combo works for you.

Are you still tired on the Well??
I don't know what to do =(

Initially I was taking the Wellbutrin during the day, now I've switched to the evening, because it makes me sleepy. I have been taking it around 5-6 p.m. working out at the gym and sleeping very well at nights.

You'll be in my prayers.
