celexa muscle tension: would more klonopin help

Posted by babs on July 6, 2003, at 21:59:38

Every day around 3 or 4 PM I develop muscle tension in my neck and shoulders that leads to a big, bad headache. It's only happened since I upped my celexa to 80 mg for OCD 5 weeks ago. I was on risperdal and had no problems with muscle tension but had to go off it because of elevated prolactin levels. We added 1.75 mg of klonopin to the celexa- I take 1 mg at night, .5 in the morning and .25 around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. I'm wondering if upping the afternoon klonopin dose to a full .5 mg might help the muscle tension and headaches. They're pretty bad. thanks, babs

I would think it might help... all benzos have muscle relaxant properties.

Hi babs, I was on Resperdal also and had to go off of it for increased Prolactin levels also. I take a full 2mg of Klonopin all at night and it does wonders for my tension-I get that a lot. I try to get massages often but I have slipped up on that for 2 months now. Taking 2mg of Klonopin at night carries over into the next day and it does not make me zombie-like. It works for me it may work for you. But it may sound like a lot to take for you, I don't know. Hope this may help.
Good luck and I hope you feel better. Also, have you ever been checked out for migraines? Just a thought. What other meds do you take?

Thanks galkeepinon- I just take the celexa and the klonopin. I have been checked for migraines and i on't have them. the headaches really only started when I upped the celexa and I know when I was on celexa alone I had horrible muscle tension. I may try taking a full .5 mg this afternoon and see if it helpes. I'm actually finding the increased celexa in combo with the klonopin is working almost as well as risperdal if not better. I feel less sluggish and more motivated than when I was on the risperdal and best of all I'm losing weight (I gained 60 pounds on risperdal!). How do you find it works for you? thanks, babs

It seems that the abrupt onset of the symptoms you have described, coinciding with the increase in Celexa to 80mg, (which is a fairly high dose) and the addition of Klonopin (a pro serotonin drug) could be causing your problems. You may be experiencing serotonin syndrome, which in most cases presents as stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and a headache. The vast majority of cases are mild, and transient. Have you told your Dr. about these problems since increasing the celexa?

You're very welcome babs, hope you're feeling a little better? Glad to hear you don't have migraines! I've been on pretty much all of the anti-depressants and a lot of them do cause headaches for some-not everyone-especially at first until your body adjusts.
Great!-If the increased celexa in combo with the Klonopin is working for you-stick with that. I didn't like Resperdal. Again, most of the anti-psychotics meds cause weight gain, I don't know of anyone that hasn't gained any weight while on one unfortunately. When you asked "How do I find it works for me?" What med did you mean?

Dear djmmm- I've had this problem before and I spent years going to a chiropractor for it (which helped) but the risperdal relaxed me so much it went away. I tried taking a full .5 mg of klonopin this afternoon and it didn't happen so it looks like I may have my answer! I forgot to mention this week has been especially bad because i developed heat exhaustion while hiking. But I feel better today. Thanks for your post, babs

That's why I said-not the med for me LOL

babs, LOL Ok I just replied to the Resperdal question LOL
that's ok, I lose my mind often too LOL
Klonopin seems to be doing ok for me, I've been on it for a while now-about 3 years. I tried to stop it-, under a docs care and it didn't work:
-extreme headaches, anxiety like crazy
this was gradually also. I started at 2mg, went down to 1.5, then 1, then .5 and it just didn't cut it with me. So for now I am back on 2mg at night, and 1mg PRN in the day. I often wonder why I need to take so much-psychological-I believe-I should really be careful.

Sending more good wishes your way........

Gal

Galkeepinon- If it makes you feel any better- I actually started lactating! And I gained 60 pounds. Did you lose the weight after you went on it? If so, how long did it take? Thanks, babs

oh s$#@! you're kidding geeeeeez isn't that special?!!! That Resperdal can do some pretty funky stuff I guees huh. Yes, I lost the weight after I went off the Resperdal, I was on it for a very short time. It took about 2 months for me to lose it.

Babs,

Yes, more klonopin might help. I was placed on Klonopin when I was put on Celexa and I would clench my jaw at night causing grinding teeth and terrible pain. It worked for me then. The current pdoc switched the Klonopin with Neurontin. Mostly the Neurontin works for me too. You may have to augment with Neurontin and the Klonopin if the Klonopin alone does not cut it.

This is just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks simcha- I tried it yesterday afternoon (taking a full .5 mg) and it worked. No muscle tension or headache. I also started wearing the mouthguard I got from my dentist because celexa does the same thing to me- makes me grind my teth at night and I wake up with a really tense jaw. The mouth guard seems to be helping too. thanks for your input, babs

Galkeepinon- I can't believe you lost the 45 pounds in two months. Good for you! What's your secret? The weight is coming off- so far I've lost 13 pounds in 5 weeks but I was hoping it would come off a little faster. I'm not eating much either- the celexa really decreases my appetite. Thanks for all your posts, babs

hi babs, wow where'd ya get 45???? I wish. LOL
I said 25 lol still only 25. I started Topamax 2 months ago and it decreased my appetite a lot and took away my taste for a lot of things.
That's how I did it. LOL
I'm glad the Celexa is working for you-that's wonderful. It does well for your appetite? How about the depression? I was on that med some time ago and it did work well. I didn't gain weight on it either.

Klonopin has very very addictive properties. Make sure you don't increase too much or you may not be able to come down.
