What is the Klonopin/Xanax equivalent?

Posted by cubbybear on June 23, 2003, at 21:29:23

In the "old days" before I had to get onto a regular regimen of Klonopin, I'd take .5 mg. Xanax for an occasional night of insomnia or what my former pdoc calls "situational" anxiety--something like once a month. I'm currently in the process of weaning off Klonopin totally.
Now that I know K can give me a good night's sleep and is less habituating, can someone tell me what is the equivalent dose of Klonopin to .5 mg. Xanax?

http://www.mental-health-today.com/rx/benzo.htm

0.5 mg alprazolam (Xanax) is "equivalent" to 0.25 mg clonazepam (Klonopin).

I'm not sure that I buy these blanket "equivalencies" -- by extension, 1 mg Klonopin would be equivalent to 2 mg Xanax. Yet, 1 mg Klonopin is just right for me, whereas 2 mg Xanax would knock me out. And, any amount of Valium seems to make me a zombie. I think there's too much individual variation in response to specific benzos to make these comparisons very meaningful.

I agree 100% - that's why I've put "" on equivalence. I can take 3 mg of Klonopin and still think and do everything consciously, but if I took "equivalent" in Valiums - I would be on the floor in less than an hour ;)

Take care,
Brad

I don't think it is all so simple to compare benzos like most people seem to think. Yes, there *ARE* dose equivalence links, but that doesn't take into account such things as half-life (how long it stays in your body). So, take the comparisons, even those from medical sources (even Dr. Bob has a chart), with a modicum of "personal experience". Many *are* interchangeable to a degree, but nothing is exactly the same as far as dosing goes.
