Is Neurontin any good?

Posted by Edgefield on April 15, 2003, at 17:19:59

Is anyone having any success with Neurontin as a mood stabilizer? At what dose does it work to stabilize your mood? I've been taking 300mg a day and I haven't noticed any improvement.
Thanks!
God Bless

I find it extremely mild at best (I'm at 1200 mg/day and don't feel anything). It did make me feel very good the first few times I took it, then nothing. My pdoc suggests that I stay on it for "background stability" (along with my other meds), and some here find it helpful for anxiety. My pdoc considers it the mildest and safest of mood stabilizers, and I have no side effects (or effects at all?).

Hi Edgefield,

I think you're new here, if so, welcome!

This really depends on the person. I was put on 1200 mgs and it did absolutely nothing for my moods. What it did do was make me extremely fatigued. That doesn't mean that will happen to you, that's just my experience with it. IMHO, 300 mgs is an extremely low dose, does your doc plan to increase it? I've read here of people who've had no success with it and others (and some I've talked to) who swear by it. Depends on your body's chemistry I guess.

The MS I'm on now is Topamax (200 mgs, 100 am, 100 pm) and it works great for me. There's some issues for most people with cognitive dulling during the start-up phases, but my experience is that it goes away if you stick it out long enough.

I hope this has been of some help to you and good luck!

Greg

Thanks for the information. What do you mean by cognitive dulling?

Hi again,

Cognitive dulling is basically just a slowing of the thought process. My wife and I called it "a case of the stupids". You just have a day or two (for most people) of not being able to process simple information, not to the point of being a danger to yourself or others, but irritating little things. Like not being able to do simple math equations, forgetting where you put things, stuff like that. You go up at relatively small doses on the Topamax (usually 50 mgs per week) and most people have this dulling for a day or two at each increase. Once you've hit your target dose, the dulling will stop, at least it did for me. And the positive effect on my mood swings was well worth the minor discomfort along the way.

I hope your day is a good one,
Greg

I find it helpful for irritability on an as-needed basis. Sometimes its helpful for an acute spot of depression. It doesn't make me drowsy in the daytime but I take it at night because for whatever reason it seems to help me stay asleep through the night.

Greg, thank you so much for the information. I will see my psychiatrist next week and I will discuss trying Topomax. Thank God for this site, Dr. Bob, and people like you. You enable me to make wiser decisions concerning my health.
God Bless

You may find my previous lengthy post (to another thread), entitled "Neurontin: solution or problem?" [http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20030125/msgs/137900.html] a source of useful information, or at least amusing reading. One man's opinion, FWIW.

hope this helps,
Bob
