How long does LEXAPRO take to kick in?

Posted by Janelle on March 23, 2003, at 19:18:51

Lexapro - the supposedly *new and improved* version of Celexa ... I heard somewhere that Lexapro takes considerably less time (like only a few days) for benefits to be felt vs. a few weeks for other a-d's. Is this true? Feedback from anyone with Lexapro experience gladly welcomed.

If you're the same Janelle who used to post here, I'm very glad to see your name. Last I knew, you were at a very low point...

Hope you are doing better now, please let me know...

best wishes,
Wendy

I think you need to give it a few weeks. I have been on it since it came out and and doing extremely well on it. I think more clearly on Lexapro than I did on Celexa. Both were very good for my depression which used to be severe, but is now almost non-existent.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS! It is the SAME Janelle and I'm thrilled that you remember me! I tried emailing you before I began to have MAJOR PROBLEMS (they're minor ones now, but I'm still struggling). Anyway, hotmail closes down your email acct if you don't use it for awhile, so I lost everything from you, including your addy. I think we should continue this thread on the *social* board and get back in touch with e-mail too. I have a new address that works great!

I felt the effects of the lexapro after only about 4 or 5 days with no side effects. My doc and the pharmacist said it can take 2-4 weeks to feel the full effect, although that wasn't my experience. Although it worked great for a while, it seems to have stopped. I posted earlier about this and the feedback I got indicated that I may just need to up my dose. I have a doctor's appt. today, so we'll see what he says. Good luck to you.

It took me a while to feel Lexapro. I had to increase my dosage to 20 mg and wait about 9 weeks in total before I felt better. My doctor said it is cause I have been on other medications and they usually work at a high dosage for me. I am also taking 40 mgs of Prozac simultaneously.

I read various things on this site about when it started working for people. I started getting discouraged cause nothing was happening for me. Just remember everyone's body reacts differently.

I had the same experience, but the strange thing is I started feeling better when we increased the dose, and then dropped down into a deeper depression and a week later came back up. Very strange. I think I am stable now. It has been about 9 weeks total.

My experience has been similar. Tomorrow is day 1 of week 9 at 10mg Lex. Started at 5mg but was not getting good results.
Side effects (and I had them all and BAD!) are virtually gone. Have not had any more anxiety or terrible screaming fights w/husband since 4th week.
Feel better overall, but still have good and bad days, just not the extremes of emotions I had before starting Lex. People say they've noticed I'm not so "crazy" as I was!
