lithium vs. zyprexa for bipolar II

Posted by cybercafe on March 12, 2003, at 20:28:15

hi, i am wondering if taking lithium would have a
greater antidepressant effect than 2.5 mg of zyprexa for bipolar type 2

Personally, I don't think so. Of course, you know YMMV, etc. But knowing the actions and mechanisms of both drugs, I would think the Zyprexa (and maybe even at a bit higher dose) would work better for BPII. At least that is what I experienced when I have taken both.

There is some research indicating effectiveness in combining a mood stabilizer with the atypicals, so you could give it a shot. If I where choosing a mood stabilizer in BPII, I'd go with Depakote, and noticed that I didn't need quite the same high levels even normally prescribed. (It only added to side effects.)

Just my take..and you know YMMV, etc. Hope that is some help.

Best,
Jay

okay zyprexa is wonderful for levelling out moods ... but the mood i get is always depressed

i understand lithium not only provides mood stability but also has an antidepressant effect

yeah i took depakote before... but just like zyprexa, it didn't give me much in the way of antidepressant effect

oh well... thanks for replying jay :)

haha...
ymmv = your mind may vary.... i.e. a drug may effect you differently

i hear really really good things about lithium ....
like, go to support groups and see people who say they
have been completely fine for decades on just lithium

people who take it for bipolar, people who take it for depression, etc etc

i dunno..i am really fucked because i have bipolar + ADD so there are many drugs i can't take
for most other people, i think there is great hope

I'd appreciate it if you didn't use language that could offend others, thanks.
