How do I get a benzo?

Posted by Caleb462 on March 12, 2003, at 22:42:33

My psych. isn't going for it, and likely never will. He sees benzos as "addictive drugs"... I wonder what he considers SSRIs and the like then. Anyway... so, should I try yet another p-doc? Or perhaps see a GP instead?

And what exactly do I say? Should I just tell him/her flat out - "I want Klonopin", or are there better/more subtle ways to go about it. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Wow! Benzos, my favorite topic. When I first tried Xanax for three months, I would have done just about anything to continue taking them. I felt utterly in control of my surroundings for the first time in my life. Of course, it was an illusion.

Today I have two bottles of it laying around, unused. I could refill it six more times but I probably won't. I think the efficacy of these pills diminish with time and the brain changes accordingly. I have concluded the only sure thing about psychopharmocolgy is its changing nature.

I tried to opt out of the serious drugs because I did not want to see myself as being "one of those people." Here is how I obtained the Xanax:
"Hey doc, my shrink is trying to force all these drugs on me and I don't feel I need all those pills. Can you give me a small dose of ________?"
It worked.

And then I had a relapse.

Since then, I am learning to trust my pdoc bit by bit. I still think he is in cahoots with the neighborhood pharmacy. And I still research anything he prescribes. But we now have an understanding that we will work as a team.

And I am the captain.

p.s. I have a few bottles of Klonopin laying around too!

See another doctor (preferably a psychiatrist), tell them that various drugs you've tried for anxiety haven't worked, and mention that you've heard that clonazepam helps (be kind of vague about it; don't indicate any familiarity with benzos). Don't ask for Xanax; my pdoc says this is a huge red flag. And, be insistent about the classes of meds you refuse to take, with good reasons to back this up.

If you have panic attacks, emphasize this -- Klonopin is one of the 'gold standard" drugs for panic disorder (with good reason).

I'm not suggesting any deception; you just don't want to give any hint that you like benzos, because so many doctors are ridiculously paranoid about these drugs.

Just to emphasize: having panic attacks really helps (if it's true). I do, and I think this is what triggered an immediate multi-benzo prescription once I saw a good psychiatrist.

BTW, previous history of drug use isn't necessarily a contraindication, unless you've actually abused benzos. If you've used them legitimately and didn't get off (like me), this is worth mentioning if the context is right. I said (quite honestly) that anything above the prescribed dose just made me sleepy, and this seemed to reassure my pdoc.

I doubt you'll get anything more than a short-term benzo prescription from a GP, unless you're very lucky; most will just want to try endless still-under-patent ADs (or even APs), no matter what you say.

until i went to my present pdoc (who specializes in anxiety disorders), i had no difficulty in getting benzos from internists. personally i think they understand the efficacy of benzos for anxiety/panic then most shrinks who seem to be in love with ssri's. i have a pretty long history, but if you are going to your family doc you just say what your symptoms are and you would like to give xanax or klonopin or ativin a try for a month, then if it works ask for refills. i honestly think you'll have no problem. take care, judy

Hi, I hear you here. I have somewhat of an anti-benzo pdoc.-not my gpdoc. First, may I suggest that you talk to this psychiatrist and say, "I am very aware of the addicitve properties of benzos, I think that they will help me out, and I plan to take them responsibly, and if I have a problem, I will tell you"?
You think that would work? I would try to find a doc that would help you on a trial of benzos, I mean there are docs out there who gladly prescribe them-reasonably.
I wish you all the best, please keep me posted:-)

I know you may have been kidding, but for the record, please don't ask for medication directly from others here. Thanks,

Bob

I gotta comment on this. That's why I said huh? I was gonna say a big NO NO. Someone, and I took it, gave me Ambien, and I ended up in the ER. It was NOT prescribed to me , but I took it like a dope. Never again!!!!!!!!!!==================================================================================================
