B-12 shots for fatigue?

Posted by Greg on March 10, 2003, at 14:29:52

Hi all,

I've had extreme exhaustion and fatigue for a few weeks now. My doctor is targeting anemia or possible thyroid problems as the primary cause. I've read that in certain cases of anemia B-12 shots are used. I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever had one and would share their experience, good or bad, with it? I get the results of the blood tests back tomorrow and am thinking of requesting one regardless of the outcome. Can it have any negative side-effects?

Anything you can share with me would be greatly appreciated. I'm so damned tired...

Greg

Greg, I think that would be in the case of B-12 deficiency-related anemia, not iron-deficient anemia. I think they are different things.

My sister became B-12 deficient and had to have shots. It definitely helped her. She had this awful fatigue that took a while to diagnose. Finally, they tested her B12 and sure enough she was very deficient due to totally vegan diet. She had shots every day, then once a week, then monthly, etc. and finally down to oral supplement for maintenance. I don't know anything about how it affects people if they are not extremely deficient, as she was.

I believe that it is pretty uncommon to become depeleted of B12 as she did. Apparently, we can store an awful lot of it in our livers, and it occurs naturally in animal-based foods.

I know that Van Morrison before he went on stage would get B12 shots. As a woman, I take extra B Vitamins to help with PMS.I don't feel it changes my energy level, but a shot may be more concentrated.

Just my experience......According to Lindora the good ole weight loss program, Vit B "shots"- get in your system quicker and helps more, just my opinion.
good luck:-)

Hi Noa, the reason I brought this up was I've been doing a lot of research on the possibilities for what could be causing the exhaustion and fatigue. Anemia, thyroid problems, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, CFS, are just a few. But I came across something called Pernicious Anemia which really fit all my symptoms to a tee. If I understand correctly, it is basically a depletion of B-12 in the system. I know that when you're not feeling well and desperately seeking answers, you can find just about anything to diagnose yourself with, but this was so right on the money. I know that the liver can store a lot of B-12, but with my being a RA, I wonder how much damage I did to it when I was drinking?

As I said, I'm just looking for answers and a glimmer of hope. I'll find out today for sure. Thank you for your feedback on this, as always I appreciate your wisdom and friendship.

Thanks to you both for your feedback! I get my test results back today so hopefully I'll have some answers. I think regardless of what happens I'll push for the B-12 shot anyway. I've asked about it here and at a few other sites and haven't had any negative feedback. A few said they didn't notice much difference, but that was about it. Most have said the improvement was amazing. I can handle a lot of things, but being exhausted all the time isn't one of them. Something's gotta give.

Again, thank you for responding. I truly do appreciate it.

So if I get these shots, does it mean I can become a singer and get rich and famous? Probably not, but the thought is nice...

Yo Greg,

(Uh, oh, would hate to get TOO social here- we'll get kicked out!) Sweet of you to ask about us - the apple of my eye, my daughter, I do love her so much. And yeah, we are really well.

But getting back to meds, I hope you post about your lab tests and tell us what you found out...

much love,
W.

Yes, pernicious anemia, which is different than iron-deficient anemia.

Why not test your b12 levels?

So what was the results of your tests? Your decision on B-12 shots? And have you resolved your fatigue? I am going through the same thing, I have had two B-12 shots in the last two weeks with no noted difference and tests that show nothing as yet.
