I have BPD also...

I have been through the SRRI's.. only one that helped at all was Effexor, htough I didn;t like the side effects I got from that. Tried various other meds with little success too.

I;m now on Zyprexa and that has helped with the bad thoughts (self harm and suicidal) a HUGE amount.. though I feel I need something else that will lift the depression..

I'm a member of a BPD list, and there really doesn't seem tp be any drug that helps more than others. DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) has helped some people a huge amount, and CBT is helping me quite a bit.

Just my opinion, but I believe the APs, Zyprexa in particular, would be give you the best odds for success. And to really seal the deal, add in 10mg to 20mg Prozac with it. The combination offers specialness that neither drug alone can provide.

My opinion of using APs for BPD is because I think BPD has some overlap or common threads with certain aspects of schizophrenia. I'm not saying BPD is schizophrenia, just that there are some similarities.

Donny,

I know of two treatments that have shown success in this disorder- one is a carbemazapine and prozac combination, and the other is Lamictal.
Do a google search on BPD and Carb/prozac, and then check out Lam. and BPD.

Good luck,

Col.

PS.I came across this info. whilst looking into bipolar treatments.

Though I doubt it would come to this, I have heard of anticholinesterase drugs like Aricept (donezepil) have been useful occasionally for BPD. Other than that, I understand Prozac and certain antipsychotics are the most useful pharmacologic approach. The main thing is to stay away from benzos if at all possible.

"The main thing is to stay away from benzos if at all possible."

Why? I would expect something like 1mg Klonopin bid would treat that facet nicely, no? There must be something that is effective for the anxiety symptom that is not a benzo. Effexor?

How is Prozac with anxiety? I know it doesn't have FDA approval for anxiety disorders and tends to be an 'activating' SSRI.

I suppose it's not an absolute contraindication, but I've come across a lot of studies warning against benzo use in borderlines. I think it had something to do with benzodiazepines increasing aggression/irritability. On the other hand, maybe Klonopin would be a little safer than some of the others.

As far as other drugs are concerned, I really know about as much as you! I've tried practically everything available (in the U.S.) for anxiety and nothing has worked aside from the benzodiazepines, though high-dose BuSpar has been somewhat helpful for me. re: Prozac, I really can't say how effective it is compared to the other SSRIs, for example, as I was only on a relatively low dose (20mg). I *can* say that side effect wise it was not nearly as problematic as the others, but YMMV.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, my experiences in this area, while extensive, just haven't taught me much.

I honestly think that therapy and books have helped me with my mild dx of BPD then any med. My AD has helped a little but also my attitude towards the wicked symptoms of the unfortunate disorder that the DSMIV states as Borderline Personality Disorder.
Hope this helps a little. BPD is a tough one, but can be controlled:)

I disagree with this statement here-only from experience>>>"The main thing is to stay away from benzos if at all possible<<<< *FYI* Effexor-Xr has been shown to help GAD also, and it has done wonders for me in the past that I got back on it after making a mistake of going off.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm on Zoloft 100mg now and I don't feel too good. I'm getting bouts of anger and sadness all the time, didn't cycle like this on Celexa.

Effexor makes sense, or perhaps duluxotine (sp?) when it becomes available. The anxiety component is something I need to address and the Zoloft isn't helping much. Keeps a lid on the panic though.

This is a tough puzzle indeed.

Will look into Lamictal and Tegretol, didn't know about them--thanks.
