Lexapro and Lifestyles

Posted by Guenevere on February 20, 2003, at 17:22:35

I am just wondering what would happen if I was to drink alcohol while using this drug. I have had a difficult time finding material on that topic. I start using it Monday. What happens if people drink? Use drugs? Etc?

I don't know what male34 is talking about. Lexapro is an SSRI (not an MAOI), almost the same as celexa. You can drink on it though you may want to cut back a bit as you start because it could intensify the INITIAL side effects. Also, you may want to consider cutting back on drinking as it can lead to more depression but you know better than I do how alcohol effects your mood, everyone is different so see how it goes.

You can take most cough medicines, just not ones with dextrametha-something.

What about other drugs? Pot, cocaine, etc...

Technically, they don't interact but I wouldn't recommend it. . . . Coke use on Celexa preceded a major depressive episode that I still have not fully recovered from. Celexa has proved ineffective since. My p-doc said that it seemed just coincidental but I am not so sure. . . . Pot, while it slows many down, it has a tendency to speed up depressed people into panic states but YMMV.

I smoked pot once on lex and WHAM, I had a major full blown panic attack. It was so intense that I had to lay down and remind myself to breath... I couldn't get up for hours..but I hear its pretty common for the two to interact this way, though
