I was given a 'homemade' pill of DXM. The guy said to take it that night and it would be great. I flushed it after reading up on it.

dextromethorphan. It's the active ingredient in many cough syrups. In high dosages, it acts as a dissociative/hallucinogenic, but not a very good one. Best to be avoided unless you have a cough. There's a decent FAQ on it at http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/dxm/faq/dxm_faq.shtml

DXM is dextromethorphan, the active ingredient in Robotussin. At label dosages, it suppresses cough as well as codeine.

At higher dosages it becomes a recreational drug, classified somewhere between the psychedelics (e.g. LSD, mushrooms) and the dissocialize anesthetics (e.g. ketamine, PCP).

It amazes me that it is still available OTC in light of how widespread and well known it's recreational use has become.

Not that I think it's a good idea, but if anyone is inclined to try it, it is critical that they use the DXM-only preparations. Some cough syrups have other meds in them including acetaminophen (Tylenol) and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed). Both of these ingredients are extremely toxic in overdose (DXM is not). Nor should DXM be combined with other street drugs, or SSRIs. Most DXM related overdoses are not from the DXM itself, but from the other ingredients.

Many people who have used this recreationally have complained of itching and virtual paralysis. It's not very popular recreationally because it is rather uncomfortable and unpleasant.

Just to play devil's advocate, DXM is also a powerful antidepressant, similar to Wellbutrin in its effects - that's one reason nobody should take it in high doses in combination with an AD; the other reason is it is very liver-toxic in combination with Serzone or Trazodone.

I actually enjoyed tripping on it a few times, but it quickly became predictable and boring. However, the last time I used it, I took moderate to high doses for 4 days straight - and wound up with a manic high the next day, which broke me loose from my depressive cycle, which Wellbutrin, Serzone and Buspar had not been able to do.

I don't recommend it to anyone - it's risky, and the side effects are pretty weird. But if you are inclined to try, as previous posters have said, read the erowid.org FAQ first. It will probably be enough to put you off!
