Parnate: is this normal?

Posted by jaime on February 17, 2003, at 10:54:18

I started Parnate last Wed. (2/12). From the very first dose, I have felt very fatigued and just want to sleep all the time (have missed work and social activities because of it). Am I supposed to be feeling like this? I thought Parnate was supposed to be activating...

My dosing schedule is 10 mg for 3 days, then 20 for 3, then 30 for 1 week, then 40 thereafter. Tomorrow I'm supposed to start 30 mg but I'm afraid I will be a completely dysfunctional zombie - if it's even possible to be more zombie-like than I already am!

I think generally Parnate is supposed to be stimulating. I believe in always giving a drug a fair trial. This way there is no wondering at some future date whether the drug would have worked or not. You should give the drug some more time. Sorry about the tiredness.

I am going to start Parnate in a short while as well. If you don't find an answer to your question on this site, you may want to try

There are some parnate vets there who would gladly answer your questions.

It is supposed to be, but you've just had a paradoxical reaction. It will past almost definately.

I would personally still raise the dose and ride it out for at least a week. If still zombie-like consider lowering it then. Don't give up -- Parnate is supposed to be a very good drug.

Do you know if having a paradoxical reaction has any relation to or is a predictor of response/non-response, or is it just one of those things that sometimes happens? Thanks!

Hi Jaime,

I took Parnate for 10 weeks at pretty much the same schedule you mention in your post. My response was somewhat different. When I took my morning dose it felt like taking amphetamine (gave me a real boost, some euphoria), that would last for 4 hours and I would crash and have to go to bed and sleep for 2 hours (multiple afternoon doses made no difference). After 10 weeks the initial "boost" pooped out, after that everytime I took the stuff it put me to sleep. Actually ended up in the ER once unable to keep my eyes open - very dysphoric feeling. I am going to check out the yahoo site as suggested by another post in this thread. I was very disappointed to give up Parnate - it was really my last chance - I have had ECT and everything else under the sun.

Hope you find relief,

Geezer

> Um...I think it means little. I'm assuming you never had Parnate before. A good predictor of response is usually when the drug makes you symptoms worse to begin with. For example, if a drug makes you have more OCD in early stages then their is a preety good chance your on a winner. But, honestly, I wouldn't worry about Parnate. The MAOIs work with almost everyone who give them a fair trial -- but this might mean weeks. I've heard of some amazing responses to Parnate. Hang in there and let us all know how you go. Whatever you do, GIVE THE DRUG A LONG TRIAL.

Geezer,

I don't feel quite as weird now that I know that Parnate put at least one other person to sleep. Sorry to hear about your experience, especially since initially you got a boost from Parnate and it sounds like it was kind of a last resort med. Are you taking any meds now?

Jack,

It would be great if you would post about your experience when you go on Parnate. How did you arrive at your decision to try it? I checked out the yahoo group and am just lurking for now - thanks for the link.

Just 450mg of Trileptal and a little Klonopin to fight off the anxiety attacks at the moment. Might talk the new pdoc into giving me a blast of Dexadrine with some Klonopin just to get a few days relief from the pain. I am an old "burn-out" so not much of anything works for me (I have been at it for more than thirty years) - your probably a young person - you stick with it, you will get better.
