Tofranil and impotence...

Posted by ricardo on February 16, 2003, at 8:26:53

Hi!

Right now, I once again feel discouraged about taking AD. If on the one hand I do think I need medication to overcome my depression, it seems that I just can't take the side-effects, especially the sexual ones. When I was on Paxil, I could have erections, but it took ages for me to have an orgasm. Wellbutrin was great, sexually speaking, but it did nothing to my depression. Now, on Tofranil, I'm getting impotent. However, since Tofranil is not usually associated with sexual side-effects, I wonder if it's really it that is causing my impotence or some other factor. I'd love to hear from people (specially males) who have taken it so as to tell me whether they've had the same problem.

Thanks a lot!
Ricardo

I think it is the Tofranil which is causing your sexual problems. I once tried desipramine which is a metabolite of imipramine (Tofranil) and it made me totally impotent.

I recommend that you try either amitriptyline or nortryptiline. I think amitriptyline actually improved my sexual functioning.

Tofranil can easily cause impotence.

Thanks a lot!

I feel much better now! But... in the case of discontinuing Tofranil, when should I get back to normal?

I'm male and have been taking imipramine for 20 years. It's never caused impotence or other sexual malfunctions. I believe that it is statistically no more likely to cause sexual problems than placebo.

Question for you. Do you get night time erections? If you do it's a good sign that imipramine is not causing your difficulties.

Feel Better,

Britt
