low-dose risperdal for OCD: Misc. questions

Posted by yeltom on January 18, 2003, at 13:10:36

My doctor just started me on .25 mg of Risperdal. I'm also taking 40 mg of Celexa. I have depression, anxiety, and obsessions. I originally thought it was weird to be put on an "antipsychotic" for these problems, but then I read an research study suggesting that it's a very different drug at low doses and recommending that it get a second classification. I've been on it for 4 or 5 days, and it already seems to have helped with general anxiety, but it's a little less clear whether it has helped with OCD. Anyone else in this boat? Is .25 mg enough? How long until it reaches full effect? Is this dosage low enough that I don't have to worry much about TD and/or weight gain? The only side effect I've noticed is night sweats. Anyone else noticed that? Will it go away. Any other comments? Thanks

Yeltom- I am on a low dose of risperdal (1.5mg) for the anxiety and obsessions that 60 mg of celexa did not take care of. It has worked amazingly well for me- I feel like a different person- no obsessions (they were killing me) and my anxiety has dissipated so much that I no longer even have neck pain. I saw a chiropractor for years because my neck was such a mess- knotted and pain- went on the risperdal and my tension subsided so much I don't have to see a chiropractor any more. Drawback- gained 60 pounds. I am switching to geodon next week because of the weight gain and hoping it works as well. You may not have that problem if you are on such a low dose just watch it. Good luck- may it bring you relief.

I was on it about a week. I found it to be a very effective tranquilizer, and I actually lost weight on it because I wasn't at all hungry. But it didn't have any effect on the obsessions. My pdoc said it would take longer for the full benefits of the drug to show.

I didn't like the way it affected my emotions, though, so I am now on it only as needed.

How much were you on? What else were you on? How did it affect your emotions? Thanks

Don't think 1.5 mg is a low dose as an adjunct to celexa. Maybe you should try less. 60 lbs. wow! What's geodon?

1.5mg / day of risperdal is a fairly low dose. When used as an AP the dose range is 6-8mg/day. For depression or anxiety I've seen people take as much as 2mg / day, and I'm sure others take more.

Feel Better All,

Britt

That is a low dose of Risperdal. However I wonder if you might consider trying omega-3 as an alternative if you do not require an antispychotic. This board has several people who have done very well on omega-3 fish oil for OCD.Have a look at my site at www.omega3.20megsfree.com for details.

Hi, sorry to take so long to get back to you.

I was taking .25 mg per day. As for the emotions, it didn't flatten them as badly as Luvox did, but I did feel that it was more difficult to access them. As far as I know, it might have just been a placebo effect. My pdoc still doesn't believe I had to force myself to eat on Risperdal.

I probably didn't give it an adequate trial.

As Britt said, 1.5 mg actually is a low dose. Geodon is also an atypical antipsychotic but unlike risperdal it is supposed to be weight neutral. Let's hope that's true as I will begin taking it next week!

Hi,
I am on 40 mg celexa and 1.5 of Risperdal for BiPolar II and some OCD. Doing well but did gain weight on Risperdal, am cutting back to 1.0 mg to see if that will help with the wt gain and trying to exercise. I do take the Omega 3 oil and that has also helped.
good luck,
0ona

It's definitely a low dose in its antipsychotic capacity, but as an anti-depressant/OCD , it's quite high. The study I read said it actually LOSES effectiveness for this purposes above 1.5 mg. It said maximum benefit was between .5 and 1.5 but that significant effect was seen even below .25 mg. And the people in this study werent even taking a traditional anti-D in addition. How much weight did you gain? I think you could consider going below 1 mg. My shrink won't consider anything more than 1 mg
for me.

I took it when it first came out and after 3 days my OCD Obsessions cleared up. Unfortunately the effect only last about a week.

I think 2 or 3 mg or whatever the normal amount is. It wasn't low dose.

I'm wondering if clozaril would work better, especially since I only got a partial response to risperdal.

I know nothing about that drug, but the study I read about low-dose risperdal said that it actually LOST effectiveness for OCD once the dose went above 1.5 mg. In other words, you might have been taking too much. Perhaps you felt the most benefit while you were working up to your final, too-high dose.

.5 mg of rispedal to Luvox

In reply to Re: low-dose risperdal for OCD: Misc. questions, posted by Ed O`Flaherty on January 19, 2003, at 10:49:11

my doc wants me to add risperdal to my luvox treatment.
I am a little nervous with this new drug.
I heard it causes massive wt. gain and tireness.

Will .5 mg give me a good benefit to OCD??
will .5 mg. causes wt. gain or is the dose to low??
I dont want to gain wt.
