New to Lexapro

Posted by Mellisa on January 14, 2003, at 11:18:11

Just started taking Lexapro 10mg, have been on Paxil 40mg for about 6 months. I had horrible side effects from it so the Dr. changed my meds. Can anyone give me information on Lexapro because I am terrified of having more side effects than what I am currently experiencing. I feel like I am losing my mind. Oh, I'm also taking Xanax 3 times a day! Please help me?!

> Hi Mellisa,

I started Lexapro just finished my second week today. I also was taking paxil tried three others after that and am now hoping Lex is the answer, the only side effects I am having so far are occasional night sweats, and a little anxiousness. Which isn't welcome when you are on it for panic attacks. I am also taking xanax as needed the past week I have only had to take .5mg twice a day. I don't know what day you are on but when I started it the first few days I had endless energy. I had to actually use the xanax to slow me down, was kinda jittery but that has steadily lessened. Best of luck on it!! Hope it works for you.

If you have taken xanax daily (three times a day) for more than two weeks, you are addicted. That's OKAY! It is a necessary reality for some psychiatric treatments but xanax is very short acting in the body and some of your mood swings are due to the ups and downs of this med. From my experience, others in this class of drugs like ativan would be better. I take klonipin but that is heavy duty.

I wish I could give you info on Lexapro but I've never taken it. Part of the depressed mindset, though, is expecting the worst and fortune telling. All meds are different. I wish you well, River.

I started Lexapro treatment two days after the FDA allowed physisian in the US to begin using it. At the time I was taking up to 60 milligrams of valium, but somehow my panic attacks seemed to worsen and doc and thought it best to go back to xanax (up to 8 mg) for the time being. I know one thing, he mentioned that on paper Lexapro may not be the "best" of new anti's--that he seems to feel is effexor, but that was "pooping out" on me.

So far so good with the lexapro, though.

good luck,

~Tony

Hi. I am a bit new here and don't yet understand the (NM) thing. I hope what I said was not offensive to you at all. I know it wasn't ment to be. If you or someone else reads this would you explain...?

thanks,

~Tony

Here, I've added a section to the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#nm

If anyone has any feedback, I'd be interested, but it should probably be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. Thanks,

Bob
