My 14 y/o son has been treated with Ritalin for about 4 years with only mild success. Adderall was too strong for him. His child psychiatrist switche dhim to Wellbutrin (150mg bid) about 10 days ago at my prompting - I had noticed symptoms of depression including tearfulness, irritabiliyt and lack of interst in activities. Has anyone had experience or info on the use of Straterra with kids?

Just an opinion/intuition, but that sounds like Wellbutrin-induced anxiety/agitation to me. It can cause greatly worsened social anxiety in some people.

It may be time that you re-evaluate your son's diagnosis. You said he had been on Ritalin for 4 years, and he's 14...A 10yr olds ability to accurately explain his emotions may be limited, he may be better able to express himself now, 4 years later. Depression and social anxiety could be present, in which case, a stimulant won't always do the trick.

There is one poster on the straterra thread above who was reporting here on his 8 year old son's trial of straterra--I think it was quite positive. He was part of the study for approval. I think the pre-approval studies were on kids. But don't take my word for it--look back at that thread to see his post.

I would like to agree with what djmmm said about a reevaluation of disgnosis. Has Bipolar Disorder been completely ruled out? There are "fads" that crop up in psychiatry - a few years ago the big fad for children was ADD and ADHD (the DX often made on the say-so of a teacher or social worker), today the fad seems to be Bipolar Disorder (I, II, III, IV, etc.). The problem in making the DX is the lack of "empirical science" in the testing (no blood tests, no genetic markers, etc.). I am convinced on one point - if the child does have Bipolar Disorder - you can't effectively treat his moods without first "stabilizing" him. This requires anti-epileptic meds., then perhaps the addition of ADs and/or drugs from other catagories. It is just MHO but the thought of giving a kid with Bipolar, pstims only, gives me the shivers (I did it to myself for years with poor results). Just my thoughts, I do want to see your son recover and have relief from his pain.
