Want to try an MAOI...

Posted by jparsell82 on January 17, 2003, at 5:19:11

Hi I'm a 20 yr old from Ohio. I have Social Anxiety & Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.... also some depression. The worst is my social anxiety... I've been tried on Paxil, Effexor, Prozac w/low dose of Risperdal. On all of these I've felt less depressed but none of them has helped a bit with my social anxiety and that's what I want to get better the most. I've researched a lot on the internet and it seems a Maoi such as Nardil or Parnate have been the most successful for SAD. The thing is my psychiatrist hasn't ever prescribed one before and doesn't want to. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good psychiatrist I could see in Ohio ... someone more experienced with SAD. Also... and input about successful meds for SAD would be great. Thanks a lot, Josh.

Hi Josh,

I'm not very familiar with Ohio, but based on reputation, I think that the Cleveland Clinic has some excellent treatment options for folks like us. If Cleveland is not a convenient place for you, a lot of large hospitals make referrals to psychiatrists all over the state who are affiliated with them. I don't know if the Cleveland Clinic does that, but it might be a good starting point.

I hope this helps you.

Try to find a psychiatrist associated with a hospital, or a psychiatrist that has the reputation of being progressive. Try asking your current psychiatrist if s/he can recommend another doc..just doing that may make him/her think again about not prescribing a safe/non-narcotic/non-addictive med like Nardil or Parnate. Being only 20yrs old, you will respond better to MAOIs (in terms of side-effects) Your doc SHOULD be pleased that you are taking an active role in your medical therapy.

And don't forget to make it well known that it is irresponsibe for your doc to withhold a potentially life saving/changing med just because s/he has "never prescribed it."

After being on 2 SSRIs, a SNRI, and a SSRI + combo, Any competent psychiatrist should consider a trial of a MAOI, especially if social anxiety is prominant.
