Wich SSRI does not cause lost of sex drive???

Posted by Tepiaca on January 7, 2003, at 16:46:30

Hi , Im looking for another alternative to the Zoloft because my sexual desire is completely gone. Is there another SSRi that could help without that effect?
Im taking the Zoloft due to SP and depression.
What other medicienes could I try besides the
SSRI?
Thank you

All SSRIs are likely to cause loss of sex drive.
You have other options though.

You could take Wellbutrin alone or along with the Zoloft, Wellbutrin usually reverses SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and may actually cause improved sexual function.

You could take a 5-HT2 antagonist, maybe a low dose of Risperdal. SSRI induced sex problems come from increased activity at 5-HT2 sites. Of course, taking an anti-psychotic solely to treat a side effect may not be the most desirable idea.

Personally, I've found that Effexor - a SNRI - does not cause any signifigant change in sex drive. So you might wanna try Effexor, but there is still the chance it will dampen your libido.

I personally can't recommend any SSRI due to what I deem as their lack of efficacy and, for some people, terrible withdrawal syndromes. I was on Sertraline (Zoloft). I had no sexual dysfunction.

I would recommend Phenelzine (Nardil). It is excellant for depression and SP.

hi , thank you for your response
You said i should try efexor . Ive read that
efexor is one drug that has the biggest problems
of sexual disfunction. Am I wrong? are you taking
this medicine right now?
Do you think that is possible that other ssri
like prozac does not cause sexual disfunction
on me ?? is this possible?
Thank you

Yes, Nardil is an MAOI. It is actually called an irreversible MAOI.

I am a male and it has caused sexual dysfunction for me. It doesn't necessarily cause it for everybody and it goes away in time. The most common side effects of Nardil are...
1. Weight gain
2. constipation
3. Dry mouth

Sometimes they do go away. Remember when you use Nardil you need a special diet. But the drug works very well and is definately worth it. If you try it it may take some time to work. Depending on your individual metabolism you may require a high dose (90mg)

> Thank you

All the best!

My doctor tried adding in Ritalin at the time of sex. Sometimes it helps stimulate the sex drive. There is also Viagra. If the doctor says it is ok to combine meds, there is no stigma in using it.

I recently switched from Paxil for the same reason, I am currently on Lexapro close to two weeks now and yes, I have a smile again!! lol
I did try the Welbutrin but I had an allergic reaction to it.

Good Luck,

Kathie

Oh, this has been such a problem for me. I'm on imipramine now (a tricyclic) with no sexual side effects. In the past I took Sam-e without sexual side effects but it was expensive. Someone mentioned adding ritalin. I took Prozac with ritalin and the sex stuff improved. Many people say effexor is better than SSRI's as sexual stuff goes. I did not find this to be true. Two friends of mine took it with no trouble, so... maybe worth a shot. I couldn't handle wellbutrin but many do and it's reputed to be without sexual side effects. Don't give up. My doc has in the past mixed meds so I could keep doses down and bypass side effects. Maybe a tricyclic with a little effexor? They say Serzone is better as far as sex goes, but it sedated me a lot. Sometimes med "cocktails" are the answer. Just be wary of docs who say it can't be improved upon because there are lots of things to try. People have added buspar to SSRI's to improve libido. Didn't work for me, but I may not have taken enough.

Best,
Lia

Never lost wny sex drive at all on Zoloft. But Zoloft was a poor drug, like all SSRIs. MY opinion.
