Meds for suicidal ideation?

Posted by Guy on January 12, 2003, at 13:42:06

Every day I feel terrible and, despite my best efforts, start pondering how to escape this nightmare. My sleep is poor, I have huge bags under my eyes, I am blind in one eye (due to childhood accident), I am constantly aware that my brain is malfunctioning, headache, neckache, a nervous system that is constantly activated, I'm always scared, my mind is racing, I make impulsve decisions, I catastrophize, I am irascible and awful to be around. Last night I walked out on my wife's birthday party because my mother-in-law was so horrid towards me. I just want out but know my wife and kids would be devastated. I love them so much--why should they be burdened with me? Seven years of constant insomnia and anxiety...afraid of meds, constantly crying, slept for 10 hours last night with Remeron and clonazepam but still feel like I have worst hang-over in the world. Doesn't there come a time when you are allowed to say enough is enough. My brother-in-law says suicide would be the most cowardly act ever...if only he could walk a day in my shoes he might think differently. This is like Chinese torture. Other people get sick and die--I just keep suffering and suffering and suffering, but am always denied death. Don't know how this happened and don't know where to go from here. Seeing my shrink on Friday.

Hi Guy,
Please print out what you have written and take it with you to your pdoc. S/he needs to know that you are not doing well on your current meds, and you may feel better by Friday and not tell him everything. If you are in counseling please get your wife involved - she needs to understand what you're dealing with so she can support you. Please don't give up, it can take some time to find the right combination of meds, but at one time you obviously were living your life (you married and had a family), not being dragged through it (like your post shows).
I don't know if there is a certain med for suicide ideation, I take Xanax for anxiety.
Do the minimum necessary to get through the week (don't overburden yourself), and let us know how it goes on Friday.

Why you don't kill yourself

Hi Guy

I have been through exactly the same as you, but for a shorter period of time.

I don't see it as a coward's way out to kill yourself. That argument never made sense to me. Nor can you stay alive for the wife and kids if the torment is too great, even that powerful motivation to stay alive may not be enough. (I have a wife and kids.)

No, the reason that you don't kill yourself is because YOU ARE GOING TO GET BETTER. The suicide thing is just part of the illness, it triggers some hormone or whatever that make you want to kill yourself, it did the same to me. It's tremendously powerful, but its just a brain disfunction and it can and will be treated.

So take the fish oil and keep asking your doctor for better treatment, change doctors if you get no joy. But believe me, you WILL recover and the joy of having your wife and kids around when you get better will be the finest thing in the world.

Let us know how it goes on Friday.

fast way to get rid of suicidal ideation

i think low dose atypical antipsychotics get rid of suicidal ideation very very quickly (in a matter of hours or days)

they may or may not actually get rid of the depression, but as i understand it they are very effective against suicidal ideation

YMMV

Why do people say suicide is cowardly

I do not condone suicide in any way but
those who say it is cowardly just don't understand - as if everyone experiences
life the same way. Good luck, I did not find
relief from suicidal tendancies with Remeron,
Celexa is helping.

Lithium has been said to be great for stopping suicide. Also, suicide victims have been found to have significantly less serotonin neurons, possibly indicating a serotonin insufficiency or dysfunction. Maybe an SSRI and/or Lithium would help you. Good luck

I found Zyprexa amazing for suicidal ideation.. it literally reduced it within hours, and within days ithad gone...

I still have moments of it, but no more than 5 minutes really (normally those first 5 minutes in bed)..

It really has been a life saver with me

I think cybercafe is right about atypical antipsychotics. Most of my ideations went away very quickly. Please hang in there and let us know how you are doing.

That's if she hasn't had enough of your illness and taken the kids off to an undisclosed address.

Strangely enough, my depression was the making of my marriage. It was a second marriage and never went well, even thoughwe had two wonderful kids. However when I became ill, my wife stuck with me and was wonderful to me, the children were also very understanding and caring.

Now that I am recovered my marriage is a hundred times stronger than before. I hope that the same thing happens to your marriage.

Thanks Jack for your support. When I said "your" I meant "my". I was sort of reporting what had happened to me. My faithless, emotionally abusive wife couldn't stand any more of my anxiety, depression, complicated by self-medication, so took my kids and left me.

However, now, a year and a half on, I am very much better and happier without her, and my kids, who I have to stay regularly, have never stopped being understanding and loving towards me. I'm sorry if my comment was seen as dangerous

Hi Guy,
Just was wondering how it went at your pdoc appointment today.

For suicidal ideation - get a risperdal induced tardive dystonia and 3 years later wonder why you are on the planet.

I realize you may be feeling frustrated, but please don't be sarcastic, joke about suicide, or suggest that others harm themselves. I've asked you to be civil before, so now I'm going to block you from posting for a week.

Bob
