Please weigh in on Weight Gain!

Posted by Mr.Scott on January 8, 2003, at 0:08:02

Which of the SSRI's or Effexor are least likely to cause weight gain in your opinions and experience?

I'm thinking in terms of standard doses only such as 20mg prozac, 100mg Zoloft, 10mg Lexapro, 75-150mg of Effexor, etc..

Prozac killed my appetite so completely I had to force myself to eat anything, and then it was like chewing cardboard. But I know some folks gain weight from it, so go figure.

Hi,

I haven't gained any weight from taking Prozac. Infact at first I lost weight, but then It just went back to normal. I have heard that some people gain weight on it though. Apparently Paxil is the worst!

Hi,
I have been on Effexor XR for about 6-7 months. I am now on 75 mg and I have gained about 8 pounds and it is very hard to lose it. I think the Effexor has contributed to the weight gain because I used to take Luvox and I did not gain that much weight. Good luck, jtc

my experience has been that paxil was the worst (30 pounds in 5-6 months). celexa and effexor didn't make me gain much more but i was definetly not able to lose the paxil weight even though my exercise increase.

according to the medical literature prozac has been found to help people maintain or lose but mostly in people who were overweight to start.

Hiya,

On Prozac I at first lost like 10 pounds in two weeks, I was so activated, and after being in a death trance for a fewm months, it was great. It then leveled off and I maintained.
Paxil: gained 5 pounds right off the bat and wanted nothing but coke.
Wellabutrin:lost weight and then maintained. Made me want nothing to do with meat.

depakote: have gained 5 pounds.
:(
even with a restricted calorie diet.
hope this helps

Hi,

I gained 15 freaking pounds in one month on Paxil last year. Only wanted to sleep and eat all the time.
I lost ten or so pounds slowly on Luvox over a period of two or three months two years ago.
I lose my appetite and almost immediately drop 5 lbs. on Wellbutrin.
Right now I'm on Effexor XR for five weeks or so and do not see any weight change at all. I am really watching what I eat, though, because I sometimes see posts where Effexor XR was a weight gain culprit.

Thanks for 'weighing' in!

Right now I'm trying Lexapro and so the Celexa experiences are very relevant. Personally I have to say (if this trend continues) Lexapro and Effexor have been the best anti-weight gainers for me. Zoloft and Paxil were atrocious. Maybe it's dose related.

I do notice a digestive 'uncomfortability' however as well as muscle aches from the Lexapro.

Have been taking Lexapro 10mg for several months, in the evening. Have lost a pound to pound-and-a-half per week without paying attention -- folks at work noticed it, I didn't believe it until got on the scales (who loses weight during Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Years?!) but it's true. I have experienced some digestive gas, which is strange for me, and occasional bowel disturbance but not even sure it's related.

I have noticed <embarassed grin> that my ice cream addiction is broken . . . which can only be a result of the Lexapro. Good luck!

I think the Zoloft and Prozac caused the least weight gain for me. Luvox fattened me up in a matter of a couple months - horrible!!

I think Paxil is the worst, which is generally accepted.

Effexor, Celexa and Zoloft are more likely to produce mild weight loss for the first six months or so...then cause gradual, steady weight gain after that.

Prozac follows the same pattern, but causes the least weight gain, in my experience.

Just an opinion, but of the meds you mentioned I think Prozac is the least likely to cause weight gain. Some people do gain weight on Prozac, but one of the common side effects is actually weight loss.

Effexor can cause weight loss initially during treatment because it can tend to decrease one's appetite. But once one's body adapts to the Effexor, this tends to go away.

Been on Prozac 2 years now (highest dose was 40 mgs, right now 30), no weight gain.

John,

Would you go so far as to say that once the appetite supressant effect of Effexor is tolerated, that weight gain occurrs much the same as the other SSRIs and that this does not happen so much with Prozac?

Scott
