Gershon: taken many meds, not great, where to next?

Posted by wcfrench on November 8, 2002, at 2:36:08

Doctor Gershon,

I began being treated for symptoms of social anxiety and depression about a year and a half ago. I started with Effexor, which didn't work well enough alone, then added Neurontin which had little effect. Then moved onto (up to) antipsychotics, Seroquel, Zyprexa, Geodon. After limited and inconsistent response, with side effects, I began taking Lithium and dropped the antipsychotics. I first took Lithium and Remeron together, which had very little yield. I currently take Lithium, Zoloft, and Wellbutrin. The dosages are 300mg/2x, 150mg/1x, 100mg/2x, respectively. Again, I have limited response, and just don't feel very good. I've felt better than this during different parts of my treatment, especially on Geodon, but I can't go back to those and need something different. Its benefits also began to diminish. I feel immune to medicine. Where to next? I recently moved and have to find a new doctor, and the first one I contacted made it clear that he would not prescribe any MAOIs. I'm not sure what the best course of action is, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions. ECT, MAOIs, tricyclics? There is also a study going on for treatment-resistant depression that I have been considering. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I began taking omega-3 fish oil about a week ago and haven't seen anything change.

Thanks for your time,
Charlie

This is the kind of very specific medication question that could only be answered by a consultation with a psychiatrist who is expert in psychopharmacology and the diagnosis you may have. Too much clinical detail is missing for an opinion, and in any case this would not be an appropriate use of PsychoBabble.
