The skinny on Paxil

Posted by Nikita on October 1, 2002, at 8:44:49

Since Celexa, Zoloft, and Prozac (talk about wanting to jump out of your skin!) didn't help my depression, my pdoc is suggesting Paxil. I'm deathly afraid though because of potential weight gain. Does it happen to everyone? Other bad side effects? Did it work for you?

What happened to you on the other SSRIs? Could you describe your symptoms for us?

I tried Paxil and couldn't tolerate the side-effects.

Prozac was the only one I had trouble on, feeling jittery, insomnia, etc. Celexa and Zoloft just didn't do the trick for depression, no real problem with side effects there. I also just quit Geodon which p-doc had prescribed for my self injury problems because that didn't help. Risperdone did help for such mood swings and cutting but I gained weight right away on it. I'm afraid of the same thing with Paxil. And yes, my mental health is probably more important than what size I wear, but if I do gain, I'll be REALLY depressed!

Some folks do experience weight problems with Paxil, so there's a chance you have to deal with it too. Since you didn't respond to Celexa or Zoloft, maybe you'd do well on something a bit different than another typical SSRI like Paxil. Effexor might do the trick, or possibly Wellbutrin; although they both may make you somewhat jittery and cause insomnia. However, weight gain is less frequently associated with these two drugs. Wellbutrin can be mixed with another AD to augment its antidepressant effects.

I don't have experience with cutting or cycling, bit it seems you might benefit from a mood stabilizer in addition to the AD. Also, some ADs are better for folks who cycle than other drugs--I'm sure you'll get some other responses sharing experience with this.

Good luck.

I was on Paxil for 10 months, and while it did wonders for my depression and anxiety (the first 8 months, anyway), I gained around 40 lbs. It stopped working at around 8 months. I'm now on Lexapro, which has a wonderful s/e on me: decreased appetite!! All my other s/e's went away within 4 days of starting Lexapro except that one. I have now been on Lexapro for 3 weeks and 4 days. Still no appetite =)
Good luck with Paxil, or whatever drug you decide to try!

I was on Paxil for 5 yrs without weight gain, my sister has been on it almost 10 without weight gain. Paxil and Remeron have been the only two anti-d's to not cause me weight problems. Effexor was the worst!!! Not everyone gains weight so at least try it, I found it to be a good anti-d but had to stop taking it because of some troublesome side affects. Some people also go through severe withdrawal upon stopping Paxil, I didn't thankfully, so that should be taken into consideration as well.
