Why is everyone trying to get off Klonopin???

Posted by jda1292 on August 16, 2002, at 12:22:06

I am happy with my .5 * 3 daily. This med helped me and continues to help me. When my pdoc told me I needed to get off it I got rid of him. These are fine meds and until the billions of dollars of research come up with something better I am not changing a thing. Benzos are not dangerous if you use them for your illness. I have taken them for 7 years and I have no problem taking them for the rest of my life. There is no sedation, it keeps panic away with a low dose of Paxil.

I heard that there was a gaba related drug called 'pagaclone' but I think pfizer dropped the ball on that one. It seemed to do what benzos do, but without sedation.

I have a physiological illness Panic Disorder that is under control. Until such a time when the meds are immediately effective and have the same effectiveness as benzos, lame pdocs can use others for guinea pigs not me! Diabetics need insulin and I need Klonopin, are they addicted to Insulin? I think not!

Of the dozens of meds I have tried, klonopin is the only one (along with xanax) that helped my panic disorder in any way. I think pdocs that are being bought by pharm cos. are trying to get their patients off and put them on the more expensive unproven meds in the pipeline. take care, judy

My psychiatrist was talking casually about writing an article on just this topic. Benzos are very effective and cheap.

His theory isthat most resistance is actually break through symptoms. You probably shouldn't up the dose too much, try something else, but they are very useful tools.

P.S. I like klonopin better than ativan, but they don't carry it at my student health pharmacy.

> just avoid heavy machinery on the first date...

Good One! When I first took xanax before switching to kp it was the first relief that I had in years.

These freaks on TV like Angela Bassett (anxiety center?) and others on the internet that say "you can deal with the panic" or some other crap that insinutates that this is a personal weakness problem. I can't remember how many self-help books I read before I had the brains to see a doctor. Thank God I did. I also hate that excuse, just get 'prayed up' or pray harder and the panic will go away. Yeah right!

How would that prayer go? Dear God, Jesus please take away the feelings of certain death and erratic and involuntary panic that makes me shake. I have been good and want to be symptom free, please don't let me swerve off the highway and die, because medicine is evil and I am sure that you wouldn't let me destroy my life...?

There's also some psychologist out there on the net without a Ph.D. promoting his book of CBT, you don't need meds, you just need my 65.00 pamphlet. I hope this ass develops panic disorder and is stuck in his house for a year.

I don't want to deal with the Panic, I want to kill it with a little pill! Klonopin and Paxil work for me.

Don't let any GP see your statement, diabetics need insulin and I need klonopin. Because they have another theory. Diabetics need insulin and you need Antidepressants, preferably the newer ones. They won't allow you to take a benzo, but will be happy if you are ready to take ADs which induce more side effects and more psychological dependence, which is much worse than physiological dependence. We will not get any answer from them. And don't ask why ADs are safe and Benzos are dangerous. It is the trend or it is the fashion now.

Please read the following link. Any doctor worth their salt understands this basic concept. If they are unable or are unwilling to understand this basic medical principle, fire them and run - don't walk - to a doctor that does.

That is unless one wants to be treated by a doctor that is either ignorant or a medical idealogue...

Good point. There is a lot of psyhological dependence on SSRIs. I think that whatever works is what one should use. You should do your own benefit/risk analyis by putting together a 'mosaic of truth' with information from your doctor and information that you gather independently.

GREAT LINK! THANKS

Took these quotations from the link:

"Long-term users of alprazolam/lorazepam . . . used a constant or decreasing dose of medication . . . Persistant use of alprazolam/lorazepam for therapeutic purposes did not represent abuse or addiction as the terms are usually understood" (Romach, M., et. al. "Clinical Aspects of Chronic Use of Alprazolam and Lorazepam." American Journal of Psychiatry 152.8 (1995): 1161-1170).

"The vast majority of the use of benzodiazepines is appropriate. Problems of nonmedical use arise nearly exclusively among people who abuse other drugs" (Woods, J.H. and G. Winger. "Current Benzodiazepine Issues." Psychopharmacology 118.2 (1995): 107-115).

I agree with you clonapezam has worked real well for me.

I bought those stupid lucinda bassett anxiety tapes, and I read all claire weekes anxiety books plus many more. Did the praying. The meds are the only things that stopped that horrible crazy anguish.

So I'm all for benzo's, thanks for this site.

Um, well, how come no one on this board is comfortable referring to k-pax as an anti-convulsant?

Anyway, anti-convulsants are known to, according to a speech pathologist website, "reduce the drive to talk."

Given the fact that many here take it for social anxiety, doesn't this at all strike any of you as something that's less than a miracle drug?

I get told at parties like "why aren't you talking?" and so fourth, and never get told that when I'm my usual shy self- which should tell me something. I'm sticking to Neurontin.
