PROZAC: most common side effects?

Posted by Eve70 on August 7, 2002, at 17:00:21

Hi to all,
I'm very scared about Prozac side effects: on paxil they were very heavy.
In your experience which are the most common side effects of prozac in order of frequecy?
How long do they lasts?
How long does it take to begin to work?
Thanks very much for your help!

Hi,

I didn't really have any side effects, except insomnia at first and then more long term side effects which are sexual and apathy. I was impressed by its lack of side effects actually ! I had tried Effexor and had so many side effects I couldn't count them on two hands !

Its funny you don't really notice that its working and then suddenly you're better, its very progressive. Often other people will notice before you do !

Good luck and there really isn't any need to be scared. I believe that prozac is a good antidepressant, just make sure that you get the dosage right.

I had less side effects with Prozac than with Paxil, Zoloft or Celexa. I felt mildly nauseated for some of the day for about 2 weeks. And then it went away. And other than that, only sexual dysfunction. It was the most successful ssri for me. Good luck and take care -- kate

After two weeks on Prozac, I went back to my P-doc for f/u and thanked him for the diet drug. The side effects I had were loss of appetite and an activated feeling like a little extra caffiene. Quite pleasant actually. Those side effects wore off in less than a month but my ability to have an orgasm was completely gone.

Other than the sexual problem, I thought Prozac was great. Very effective.

Thaks Janejj for your share.
What do you mean with Aphaty?
Do you still suffer about it?
What was your Prozac dosage?
Thanks indeed!
Bye and good luck!

Hi,
I think Prozac is more effective if you suffer of OCD rather than unipolar dep.
I think prozac is the 1st choiche for OCD (if you do not tolerate Tca).
It would be very interesting to know the exp of prozac treatement for OCD, and its efficency.
Any of you about this?
Thanks in advance for your share!

I have OCD and took prozac for a couple months (40mg/day). It almost completely eradicated my OCD symptoms. I think it worked fantastically. It was like my thoughts just FLOWED...I couldn't obsess or think about something so intently even if I wanted to.

However, I had severe sexual dysfunction (no libido, no orgasms) which I hated.

I thought I was giving you good news; in that
I had no side effects !

I wonder what use this board would be if you only
could post about the things that worked ? I wonder
if that would effect the outcome of a course of treatment on an AD.

I know how this board works!
I was only surprised to have back only good experience about s/e!
You really give me good knows!
In fact my question was about "side effects of prozac" not about its "efficency".
Thanks to all for the share.

Dear Fairynymph,
I agree with you totally. Prozac very adversely affects human sexuality and I am afraid this effect seems to be irreversible to some extent. I was sexually very active prior to taking this stuff. But I lost almost the whole of my sexual self on this medication, though it helped me to overcome my depression and obsessive worries. So one should make a choice between his sexuality and sense of well being prior to taking prozac. Prozac can make you happy but the price you will have to pay is your sexuality. Desire phase, orgasm and ejaculation all of these can be impaired. while delayed ejaculation can be beneficial, lack of desire and orgasm is really devastating to one's sexual life. And if there is no enjoyment in sex, what is left in our life..?

Prozac is so passe

Prozac? Ha! You should just as well walk down the street wearing a hypercolor shirt, because it's so old it even was around at the time hypercolor came out!!

Trust me, Celexa is the way to go. It's very selective, as it claims, is second-generation, and its name sounds better than any other name in the world.

Mostly, go with Celexa because it has a cool name, and that will make you happy. I went on it for 6 months, it didn't do anything for my anxiety, but I was glad to have a prescription with such a good name.

Prozac did not work for me

I tried prozac and had zero effects.
Did nothing for OCD or anxiety.
Even on 20 mg. I had horrible sexual side effects. I mean total failure.

Luvox works alot better for me.
