Can you break open neurontin capsules? CAM?

Posted by Jill K. on March 5, 2002, at 2:27:40

Hello,

I have 300 mg neurontin capsules. I have been opening a capsules and emptying half in some water for my morning dose. Then put the capsule back together and take that as my afternoon dose. This way I take 150 mg in the morning and 150 mg in afternoon.

I am wondering if the neurontin dose in the morning without the capsule works. Does the stomach acid deactivate neurontin?

Jill

P.S. I read some people will empty a prozac capsule into some water without any problems.

Don't know about that, but when I was starting
Neurontin I would split the cap, dump 1/2 into the
sink and put the lid back on. Did this for each dose.
I guess I could save money on bills if I looked
into the salvation idea.

I would be interested in the results of this
question. I don't believe the stomach acid
deactivates it. The medicine doesn't get metabolized
extensively through the liver like most meds, it kinda
shoots straight through the kidney. That's why it last so short
in the body. Bummer.

regards,
john

Hi, i've the same question!
I must reduce from effexor xr 150 mg to effexor xr 75 mg.
I got a lot of boxes of effexor xr 150 mg, so i thought to open caps, divide in two the sferoydes includes, and so re-close the caps.
But, what i should do with the half left sferoydes? May i take them in a glass of water or must i throw them away?
Thanks

are available at health food stores. Nice and big. . I used to pour half a Neurontin into one and take it, put the N. cap back together for second dose.

Another trick for caps that won't pry apart is to slice off your dose & close the open end with peanut butter. . .

Oh we are creative.

Yes, you can break open Neurontin and Effexor XR.

Those thin gelatin capsules are probably dissolved in the stomach in a few minutes.

But Neurontin tastes terrible. Neurontin is eliminated in the urine unchanged.

Those little Effexor XR beads are hard and slow-dissolving; they are what make XR extended release. Where-ever did you come up with that word?? What the hell are they called?
