JohnX2 and Ritch - question for you both

Posted by rainbowlight on May 16, 2002, at 15:17:46

Okay, I am lowering the Zoloft per doctors orders. I have a few questions for you. When a med works well for the first month, and then it makes you physically sick is it possible that the dose is just too high and that lowering it may help? Also, if I am having a drug interaction, if I got off my other meds would Zoloft give me the same good benefits I was having or is the good effect only because I am on a combo of meds? Hope this makes sense! Thanks

Hi,

I think it is just the dose of the Zoloft. You were taking xyz medications and then you added Zoloft at a certain dose. You felt a *lot* better-so the Zoloft is helping *something* at *some* dose.. But, over *time* things got a little unstable and weird. Well, Zoloft has a half-life of 24 hrs, but it has a pharmacologically active metabolite that has a half-life of 2-3 *days*. Given that, it would probably take the Zoloft dose/day you were taking to slowly climb to a steady level after a couple of weeks at least. Also, if other meds you were taking were indirectly blocking the elimination of the Zoloft, then it would take *even longer* to slowly reach a steady state level of Zoloft+primary metabolite. Probably about the time you started getting "your toes in your nose". Sounds like a drastic Zoloft dose reduction would be a wise thing to get you back to feeling better without feeling wacky. Just a guess. Hey, if it helps any: I was taking just 6.75mg of Zoloft every three *days* at one time!

I think you're right, at least I am praying you are right! LOL! What you said made alot of sense. I started at 25 mgs. and quickly moved up to 50 (which made me agitated). I have reduced the level now from 37.5 mgs. a day to 12 mgs. a day. God I'm praying it works. I wonder how long it will take my body to readjust. My hubby looks so worried about me, poor guy. He is a saint! This is the first med that actually got rid of my anxiety/OCD and made me feel calm and happy. Which is a miracle since I have tried at least 25 different meds. So that may explain why I am going a little nuts trying to make it work. Thank you for helping and being supportive, I have probably sounded like a nut case for the past few days (okay weeks! LOL!). I am so glad I found this board, people seem to know what they are talking about here, thanks again! Hopefully I will be laughing about all this in a week huh?

good luck-I think you are going to be OK :-) (nm) » rainbowlight

Hi there,

You could wait it out another seven days to see if the nausea continues to abate. Another possibility would be to split the Zoloft dose and take 25mg in the AM and then take 25mg in the afternoon. There are also some antihistamines which you might be able to take to reduce the nausea. I found that OTC diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or meclizine (for car sickness) to be helpful.

Thank you for your help..I will have to check out the(Benadryl) I think that is one of the things not to take while on Zoloft..Not positive, but will check it out..Tomorrow I may try the splitting of the pill like you suggested to try and stop some of the nausea..Thank you again..Maw
