How effective is Buspar

Posted by linkadge on July 8, 2002, at 10:36:16

I've been taking Celexa mainly for anxiety
and depression - wich I think is a result
of the anxiety. How effective is Buspar
in relieving these problems. Anyone taking
Buspar on its own ?

Buspar on it's own is usually very disappointing. It's been called the world's most expensive placebo. If it is added to an SSRI it can help boost the SSRI, but often does not work. For anxiety a small dose of Xanax has worked much better for me. Nobody I know [out of 3 people] who tool Buspar alone had any success. I've seen negative reports on this Board also, but I'm not trying to be negative, just truthful.

I'm on 15mg of buspar along with my 130mg of effexor, for GAD and depression with some obessional thinking thrown in. So far I have not seen any results but I have only just increased it to 15mg about a week ago. My pdoc says that she has gone up to 60mg for some people. So well see.

I've been on 2*15 mg Buspar for about 4 years. With Serzone, Effexor, Prozac, Trazodone, and now Remeron.
After very bad experience with Effexor, I dropped AD, and went on Buspar alone for some time.

Although I feel that Buspar is doing nothing, and now after years I am fearing that I may be coming to a poop out (How can I have poop out on something that is doing nothing!?!) there is one very, very good indication that Buspar is working for me. When I am not taking Buspar, I compulsively bite my fingernails, until there is nothing left to bite. I stopped doing that within weeks from starting Buspar.

I find buspar works when youre absolutely crazy with anxiety...pop a few and all of a sudden the psychotic what ifs stop and you just find yourself doing stuff...happily...

too heavy on my guts though..

IMO, I think Buspar helps some people, but it's usually not dramatic when it does so. Because of both of these factors, I think Buspar gets somewhat of a bad reputation. But I DO think it's effects can be more than placebo, it's just that many people aren't willing to give it a full chance. This is understandable when your anxiety is causing you very immediate problems.
