LAmictal and dysthymia/unipolar

Posted by Denise528 on June 5, 2002, at 13:24:02

Hello out there,

Are there any Dysthimics or Unipolar people who have had success with Lamictal. I've done a search on this drug and from the threads I've seen the most common responders are bipolars. I don't want to give another 6 weeks of my life to trying an ineffective drug so was wondering if it was worth it.

Denise ~

I can't answer your question in the affirmative because I stopped Lamictal after only one week, but I was prescribed it for the same reasons you've been. Lamictal use seems to be increasing among unipolars who haven't responded to the traditional ADs.

FWIW,
Laurie

Denise,

I'm dysthymic/ADD, inattentive type. Not a manic bone in my body. Lamictal has helped me more than anything.

Hattree, that sounds encouraging. Out of interest, had you tried lithium before going onto Lamictal. I know that lithium is not an anticonvulsant and lamictal is but they are both mood stabilisers. From my experience with Lithium I'm not too hopeful about the lamictal.

Did you try Lithium, if so how did you respond to it?

Leighwit,

Can I ask you why you came off the lamictal?

Denise

I never gave lithium much of a trial, but from what I understand, Lamictal has greater anti-depressant action.

Six weeks? I`ve been ramping up the dose of lamictal for 6 months now-only up to 187.5 mg so far. Haven`t seen any benefit yet. You may be able to tolerate going up a lot faster, but the faster you go the greater the risk of "The Rash" and other side effects. I`ve experienced restless sleep(waking up with nightmares and not being able to get back to sleep), dizziness/incoordination, brief memory lapses, and joint and abdominal pain. I don`t know, I`ve been reading Psycho-Babble for a long time and it seems like every few months there`s a new fad drug. Lamictal seems to be the favorite now. Of course, everything works for somebody. Cecilia
