starting lithobid day 1

Posted by JohnX2 on May 13, 2002, at 21:43:54

I take 300 mg today, and 600 mg a day thereafter.

How long till I feel the effect +-?
My doctor thought I should start to have a feeler
by later this week.

Hi John,

I guess you are starting 300mg hs tonite? Tell us what you feel like after you get up tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if you have something to remark about or not. My guess is you might feel a little dazed and thirsty, but nothing too bad. I started lithium as monotherapy during the middle of a major depressive episode (after being off all meds for a year or two), and I got noticeable improvement (mainly with anxiety) after about 3 days, with another noticeable "notch" of improvement at 10 days, then what seemed like "recovery" from my depression at about 14 days (also at a 600mg/day dose).

Mitch,

Yes I took a 300mg tab 2 hrs ago. Don't really feel anything yet.
I've been having some bad downers lately. I just happened to feel
pretty good tonight (euthymic) before I took the lithium.
We'll see how it goes.

I have heard people comment on a profound impact after 1 or 2
days. My pdoc wants me to call him and let him know how
I'm doing later this week.

One thing I'm worried about is the Lithium on top of the
Serzone may wipe me out? We'll see. (Ideally I ditch the
AD and maybe just take Lamictal + Lithium).

Thanks,
John

Hi John. I sure do hope you benefit from it. I have no idea of how long before you feel a change but just wanted to mention that when my son was prescribed lithium, he felt no different one way or another. Same thing when he stopped a number of months later. It was as if he'd taken nothing. So I guess not everyone feels an effect on it.

Hi John,

I really hope the lithium works out for you. I felt very depressed and horrible within a day of taking it, but that's just me. My psydoc said lithium is one of those drugs that people seem to either hate or love. Good luck with everything!

Hi,

I had a very good experience with lithium. After two months titrating my Zoloft dose up to 200mg with no significant response, I started to feel better *three days* after adding the Lithium. I think i was taking 900mg worth of the generic pink capsules.

This was a few years ago. I quit Zoloft because it made me virtually impotent (without diminishing my desire -- very frustrating), but that combo was probably the most effective I've ever been on. Or maybe that's just nostalgia talking; it was the first time I was ever treated, and emerging from nine months of depression was a wonderful and revolutionizing experience.

Serzone (alone and with LiCO3), on the other hand, did me absolutely no good...though as always, ymmv. :)

Thanks for the support everybody.

Well 2 days in the bag. The lithium hasn't dragged me
down or caused significant side effects. My balance was
a little off, but this was also a side effect of my 2 other
meds Serzone and Lamictal, maybe a drug interaction.
No major depression...I had been struggling with bad
cycling on the Lamictal/Serzone combo.

Cross my fingers...

Thanks,
John
