PAXIL - coping with side effects ?! please help !

Posted by ben on May 1, 2002, at 3:52:03

I took Paxil for a few months with good results except side effects. weight gain, awfull tiredness (30 mg/day), teeth grinding (bruxism) restless legs and elevation of liver enzymes. Strangely the liver enzymes were okay after two month (at 30 mg/d) but after 4 month they were too high ?! At 15 mg/d they were okay again ?! Could it been the (Levodpa) which my doc added against restless legs and tiredness ? Or the combo ? The Levodopa alone didnt affect the enzymes. The Paxil alone wasnt measured ! Ihad to got off it in last december and my depression is back ! Should I give Paxil a second try and combining it with something other do diminish the side effects ? Like Wellbutrin, Jumexal (against tiredness and weight gain) ? I tried several ADs and combos (Celexa, Efexor, Remeron, Aurorix, Surmontil, Deanxit, Zoloft, Elavil, Edronax) and had to get off because of side effects or lack of response. Other problems are: combing Paxil with other meds because of 2D6 inhibition and coming off it because the short half life (withdrawal).
What do you think ? Any ideas or inputs ?

I would first add Wellbutrin to Paxil since it could help with tiredness as well as weight gain. I don't know if it will help with your bruxism but hopefully it will. Is your doctor concerned about the liver enzymes? Adding Wellbutrin might not help with that problem.

You tried Celexa in the past. Maybe the newer version of Celexa coming out in the next month or so would help. As you may know it is called escitalopram marketed under the name Lexapro in the US. It has less side effects. In particular it does not cause drowsiness like Celexa does. But it is just as effective as Celexa. Celexa does not cause bruxism for me. But I did have bruxism when I was on Prozac.

I am off Paxil and thinking of a second trial as you know. Paxil caused awful tiredness (because of liver involvement ???), bruxism, restless, legs, weight gaib BUT it was good for my mood, stabilized it from deep depression and gave me good effects aginst anxiety. My sleep was okay, I could took it before going to sleep !
I was up to 80 mg of Celexa, so I dont think Escitalopram would do much better ?! Was tired on Celexa, yawning all the time and a feeling of blunted mood (my pdoc call this as pseudoneuorleptic syndrom) the higher the dose. What abot Luvox in comparison with other SSRIs ?

For the bruxism katlieb has a good idea with Buspar. Also, your dentist can make you a mouthguard. Also drug stores sell mouthguards to wear while you sleep.
