You poor thing! All those posts with your name on it. It's like being the president, with all the reporters shoving a microphone in your face. Here's my situation:

I was recently pregnant. I did a lot of research on the effects of Serzone and an occasional Sonata during pregnancy and found only that rats and rabbits, when given the normal human dose (which would be about ten or twenty times the normal rat/rabbit dose, I suppose) had no increased pup mortality or defects. (That changed when given more than the maximum human dose.)

But I spent days on the phone calling the CDC, the NIH, Johns Hopkins Fetal Maternal, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the FDA, and other organizations. I couldn't find a single piece of information on a woman who had ever been pregnant on Serzone and/or Sonata. Nothing.

I even told all these people I would like someone to write me down, let my doctor send the information from my monthly visits, and keep a record for other women wanting to carry a baby to term on these meds. Everyone said no. There was nowhere to report it, and there was nowhere to retrieve the report.

Is this true? What can women do if they want to share experiences with each other? Should I start an organization that does this? Or do you know of one that exists?

It's urgent. Women need quick access to a resource, as post-partum depression has always been a major problem. Now we know about it and should be able to protect ourselves from severe emotional problems when trying to conceive again. (And give women with problems a chance to be pregnant without suffering!)

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your concern about my welfare. It's certainly been an intense few days. I can't do this muchlonger, but I'd like to come back soon when I have some slow time (I DO have a day job!)

I agree with you. I posted earlier about research on psychotropic use in pregnacy. No one could ethically enroll patients in such a study. No one would want to join such a study, except retrospectively.

We know Prozac is safe mostly due to a Canadian registry (retrospective) study. There is a Harvard group that is tracking pregnant women on Anti-epileptics. Those are the only ones I know about.

Most of the drug research done here is drug co sponsored. No drug co in their right mind would sponsor such a study. So we have virtually no data on this issue.

Ahhhh, but you're mistaken when you say no one would volunteer for a research study. Many of us are willing to take the risk--get pregnant and stay on meds, with hopes that we will stay sane and deliver a healthy baby. We'd certainly monitor it all closely, with amnio and sonos and everything necessary. Rather than going to the drug company to "sponsor" a study, all I'm asking is that someone take down the information when we get pregnant and carry to term on a med.

Isn't there a place that would take our information down and then share it with others? If not, can there be?

(Even a retroactive study is fine; that way, we can see what the experience of others was.)

I don't know if there are any registries that track this in particular. It certainly could be written up as a case report for the literature my your doc.

Be well.
