Kramer: What's your theory on med out?

Posted by Denise528 on April 2, 2002, at 8:59:45

Kramer,

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on why meds stop working second time round. The reason I ask is that I took tryciclics and SSRIs for 10 years (4 years ago) and they worked so well and so quickly. I came off Seroxat about 4 years ago simply because I had heard all the scaremongering about developing a tolerance to them. Anyway I was ok for 4 years, fairly depression free and then in June of last year started to go down, tried to go back on SSRIs and tryciclics (so far Prothiaden Remeron, Paxil, Zooloft, Prozac, Celexa) and none of them have worked infact I feel as though I am getting all of the negative effects with none of the positive effects. I got side effects before (sickness etc) but the depression lifted so it didnt't matter. I just can't understand why they have stopped working it is so frustrating and nobody really seems to know why. The only drug that seems to help this time round is Zyprexa and to be honest I'm worried that this will edventually stop working too and I'll be left with nothing.

CAn you advise?

Thanks.....Denise

I don't know. My best guess is that what you have now is different than what you had before. 4 years off meds should usually negate med poop out, so I don't think that's the issue. Find a doc you trust and try to figure out what's going on now.

Dr Kramer,

Thanks for your response, I do trust my Doctor but only get to see him about every six weeks and between times get so frustrated when the drugs just don't seem to work this time round. I have asked my Doctor the same question and his response has also been that the depression is different this time. However, I don't understand how it is different when it feels so much the same. How does depression change and develop into another kind of depression, can you clarify please?

Denise

Lots of things can cause depression. Maybe this is a Bipolar depression (Zyprexa working when nothing else does so far may indicate this.) Maybe it's some other condition. Only a good exam from a good doc can determine this.

Be well.
