Starting effexor - insomnia?

Posted by anon868 on December 17, 2001, at 8:39:10

I've just started on effexor last friday. 37.5mg until next friday, then I change to 75mg. 3 out of the 4 days i've taken it, i've woken up 2-3 hours earlier than usual, and not been able to get back to sleep. I know insomnia can be a side effect, but can I expect it to go away fairly soon? Also, do most people experience an increase in side effects when going from 37.5-75mg?

I had really terrible insomnia when I forst started on Effexor... after 6 days with no sleep I collapsed! Anway, I swapped from the normal version (the tablets) to the XR version (capsules) and the insomnia dissapeared!

I experienced the same thing. It went away, although I sometimes wake up a few hours early still. The difference now is that I can go back to sleep to finish the night off whereas at the beginning I was way too awake to even think of going back to sleep. I slept only 3-4 hours some nights in the first week. Now I'm back to 8-9 hours per night.

Changes in dosage should be done when most major side-effects have subsided at the lower dosage. Perhaps you're going too fast in increasing your dosage - you will likely have the same side effects again. If you still have them at the lower dose, I am not sure, but indeed, it may be worse.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar effect with the xr. I switched to taking it at night before bed and it helped.

Actually, I forgot to say I switched from morning to lunchtime and it helped. I am considering switching to dinner time however, especially if/when I increase the dosage. You're supposed to take it with food - to avoid nausea I suppose.
