Started Effexor EX this morning..

Posted by mickie on October 4, 2001, at 9:33:24

I just took my first dose (75mg) of Effexor EX about an hour ago. I have tried Prozac and just previously Wellbutrin with no apparent luck. It seems to be trial and error with anti-depressent meds. I'm really hoping this will finally work for me. Can anyone give me some feedback on their experiences with this medication? I seem to suffer from a lot of stress and anxiety with some depression even with many positive things in my life. I seem to have numbness when it comes to my feelings, especially of love. Anybody else in this type of situation? Thanks for your thoughts!!

Hi Mickie,
I am on my second week of effexor ex. I started at the 37.5mg and today I started the 75mg. So far so good. I have done a ton of reading on here about this drug and people have said that it seems to do wonders
where other drugs have not worked well. This is the first med for me. I have gad and depression even though most of my life is wonderful. Go figure. I can relate to the lack of feelings in the love dept. I sure
hope this helps. I haven't been on it long enought to tell you. Sorry. I wish you the best and hope this is the one for you. Good Luck!
Nat

hey mickie,
ive been on effexor xr for about 4 or 5 months now, up to 112.5 mgs a day... waiting to go up to 150 soon... i had anxiousness and nervousness (from a breakdown really)... before and especially right after starting fxr... you might ask your doc to put you one klonopin or xanax to smooth that out a bit... hopefully your doc isn't benzo phobic as some are...

love, ive always had too much of it on my mind... i also take geodon which is an antipsychotic which generally helps put me in the state you're probably trying to get out of... i still feel, but my moods are all flatened out...

good luck with your meds, and talk to your doctor whenever you are not feeling good from your meds, you should never suffer needlessly... hopefully you have a pdoc that listens...

Hi,

Sorry to be the voice of *gloom and doom* but I had a very NEGATIVE experience with Effexor - first of all, I could not tolerate a dose higher than 75mg/day - beyond that and I got jittery, more anxious and felt overcaffeinated, with lightheadedness and rubbery legs.

I remained at 75mg for awhile, then went down to 37.5 mg for 4 weeks, then stopped it completely (with a few days of rebound anxiety and "electric head" feelings).

Being totally off of it and it having cleared out of my system, I now see that it was NUMBING me out, to the point where I had no *real* feelings, no happiness, no sadness (and there have been things going on in my life which would warrant some kind of feeling/reaction which I was not getting).

Since being off Effexor my head has cleared (it's as if a veil of fogginess has lifted) and I've gotten my *feelings* back and at *normal* levels. I did not fall back into any kind of depression (I am on a few other meds, which are targeted to that).

Remember, this is just one person's (my) experience with Effexor; it's not a good experience, but you asked for feedback and I felt it worthwhile to share mine with you.

Good luck --- Janelle

I was on Effexor XR for about 2 months, it did wonders for my depression, but I could not deal with the physical side effects. It took me a month to get off of the medication. Taking Effexor XR again would only be an option if I couldn't get out of bed and go to work. I suffer from major depression but am functional enough to hold down a job and earn a decent living. My personal life is numb though. I don't have many feelings. It takes something really tragic to make me cry. Some days, feeling numb is the best thing that can happen to me. I am very sensitive and accept critism like a knife to the heart. I have grown some tough skin over the past years, but I still need to grown some more. Good luck with Effexor Xr.

Becky
