Sex on Meds -- Please Advise - Need it Today?

Posted by Simcha on October 2, 2001, at 10:34:51

Ok, Here is my personal coctail for the past 2 months:

40mg Celexa
150mg Wellbutrin SR

Sex is so much better on this combo than it was on Effexor XR 150mg/day. I can at least have feeling down there now.

The trouble is that it takes forever and a day to climax. This is not a problem always and can be an asset sometimes. Yet it is a hell of a lot of work for the both of us to make me have an orgasm now. This was not the case before meds.

I also have diminished sex drive. This is OK but my partner is highly sexual and I'd like to be able to keep up with him a little bit better. Before meds I had greater frequency and enjoyed it.

The trick is that this combo seems to work well for my depression and my compulsion. I do not feel as much anxiety anymore.

I am taking ginko biloba and ginseng to attempt to increase sex drive and to make it easier to have an orgasm.

I've seen several posts on alternative meds that may or may not inhibit sexual relations. My pdoc suggested Serzone before if the Celexa did not work. Will Serzone be as effective as Celexa in treating my depression/anxiety and my compulsion?

I've read about Remeron too. It seems to aid sexual function too. Yet I've also read that it is a very weak SSRI too.

Could my pdoc give me something else to help me out sexually? (Not viagra, I'm terrified of it.) I'm seeing him this afternoon and I would like to be a bit more informed on what other people have done to be able to treat their depression while having a good sex life.

I wonder if you can take Neurontin with those drugs? I have found it to help increase sex drive and energy. . .

For me remeron at 15 and 30mg actually kills my sex drive. at 45mg which i tried 2 times, i felt more stimulating. I kept at 30mg and added a norepiniphrine uptaker desipramine. works well and helps with decline in sex. look in yohimbine also. welbutrin i hear works well too. not for me, too much dopaine already in my brain. dont wanna by schizoid!

I met with my pdoc yesterday. He says that the ginko and the ginseng can't hurt even if they don't help.

The good news is that the current cocktail is a wonderful maintenance cocktail for me. The bad news is that all SSRI's have some sexual side-effects.

He's decided to tweak the levels of my current cocktail.

I will now take the following:

20mg of Celexa/day (1/2 of the original dose)
100mg of Wellbutrin SR 2x/day (adding 50mg of Welbutrin and splitting the dose into a morning dose and an afternoon dose)

I like this pdoc. He is leaving me to monitor myself. Basically he believes that I have become stable enough and that I am very in tune with my body and my emotions.

He says that I may take a break from the Celexa on days where I am planning to have sex. He also says that if my compulsion flares I may up myself back to the 40mg dose. Basically he is allowing me to control the levels of the Celexa.

I like his slow and easy approach to upping the Wellbutrin SR. When I added this drug initially it made me spacey and I had a terrible "high" feeling. I will monitor this aswell.

I am so relieved that I do not need to change meds at this time. The last change really sent me in a loop. YIKES! It was enough to make me see how unbalanced my life was before the medication. I see now that I will need something to balance me for the rest of my life. I also see that this combination is good for me and that I feel better having more control over it.

My hypnotherapist will like it that I can take charge of my medication therapy. I still use the pdoc to help me to make decisions but I have to tell him about how the meds affect me. That is how I take charge..

Thanks for all the support!

Love,
Simcha

Hi Simcha!
I recently (8 days ago) added Wellbutrin XR (100mg) to my daily dosage of Effexor XR (300mg) for the various reasons most people do. I was advised and I read that you could not split the pills, because unlike most XR meds, they are not capsules with 'beads' to divy up--i.e breaking the coating would cause instant release. I too would prefer to divide the doses if possible, but I don't want to use the instant release to achieve that. I was very surprised--and hopeful--when you said your pdoc told you to split them. I am doing okay with the Wellbutrin, but I still seem to get an initial "bam" of side effects. I have always done better taking meds in divided does--even XR meds.

Could you confirm that this has been no problem with you? I am interested in passing this along to the Dr.

Thanks,
Kaysie

No!!!

I take two different 100mg Wellbutrin SR pills, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I'm not sure if there is a 50mg of Wellbutrin SR on the market. I think not. Ask your pdoc or maybe someone on this board knows more than me.

The Effexor XR comes in 150mg capsules. You could split the dosages into 2 daily dosages of 150mg by taking separate 150mg XR pills.

My pdoc said NOTHING about splitting pills. He has split the dosage of 200mg of Wellbutrin SR into two dosing times.

I'm sorry if what I said was not clear.

Take Care,
Simcha

Hello Again.
Sorry, I saw the additional 50 mg and splitting part and made the wrong assumption. That will teach me to write a paper all night then read and respond to a thread!! I even misspelled the word "split."
I would like to know what kind of experience you have had upping the Wellbutrin dose. I do anticipate adding another 100 mg XR in the not too distant future. Days 1-4 were agitation and irritability, days 5-8 were anxiety. Today (so far) I feel really good. Did you experience the expected side effects for any period of time? If so, did they subside, and when? Did you up the dosage while you were still experiencing any side effects? I know it seems my approach to dosage increase is somewhat subjective, but my dr. has given me, to a certain extent, that latitude--i.e based upon my reactions, etc.).
Thanks again for your help and hope your treatment continues to be successful.
Kaysey

Kaysey,

Ok, mileage on all these drugs vary. So my experience may be completely different from yours.

First, I did have some start up problems. I got spacey. I had a high "rush" sort of feeling. My OCD kicked in big time. I was coming off of Effexor at the same time as this so some of it might have been Effexor withdrawal.

Then when I went to my pdoc with these complaints he added 20mg of Celexa to balance the 150mg of WellbutrinSR. He says I need an SSRI to combat OCD and anxiety. It seemed to work. He then bumped me up to 40mg of Celexa with the 150mgSR for the past 2 months. Now we have settled on 20mg of Celexa and 200mgWellbutrinSR, with minor adjustments as I see fit for the next 3 months.

So there is my experience.

I hope it helps,
Simcha

I don't think you can split the capsules with beads (like effexor xr) anyway because the beads are of varying sizes to dissolve at different rates. As Simcha pointed out, it is much safer to ask the pdoc to prescribe the med in smaller denominations.
