Nimodipine- Cam W. or Sunnely

Posted by Anna P. on October 2, 2001, at 11:10:23

Hello CamW./Sunnely. I'm looking for help. Is it safe
to combine Nimodipine with Lithium and Trilafon?
I very much appreciate your help.

Anna P.

Hi Anna.

I think the only thing you need to pay attention to is that the nimodipine and Trilafon (perphenazine) together might significantly lower your blood pressure.

Is nimodipine the med sometimes discussed as an "antidote" to maoi hypertensive crises? - lowering blood pressure? Just wondering if this is the same med, or if I'm confusing it w/something else...

You're thinking of sublingual oral nifedipine.

Hi Sal.

What is the sublingual like? Is it a tablet of some sort? Is it supposed to be better than the bite-and-swallow method some people employ (gel-caps). I've always carried a gel-cap around with me. I had thought to bite it open and swirl it around sublingually and buccally. For all I know, it might not have done a thing.

Thanks.

Yes, I tried it low. It is somewhat energizing.
Not as something like Wellbutrin or a stimulant though.

After taking low dose a week or so, the mild stimulant like effect, (initially I may have had a brief hypomanic like experience, a bit more to that story ...)
, anyway after a week or so I seemed to be getting more anxious and depressed,
which is pretty consistent with what one could expect.

A new cholinergic called donepezil may have a more tolerable profile.
It was reported that Aricept (donepezil) may work well for opiate related sedation.
(makes sence as dopaminergics also often work well with opiates).

Donepizil may undergoe some study taken on it's own for certain mood disorders as well.
It has shown more favorable effects than earlier cholinergics like
nimodipine. (btw, nimodipine tends to cause muscle tension per it's intended use).
Kind of a cool effect but I don't know that it's so good for anxiety or depression
unless it's purpose is to reverse excessive drug induced anticholinergic effects.

As several posters said, that is (oops forgot the name)

I've taken Nardil medium dose (keeps side effects away) for several years.
My docs have never recommended an antidote for me, even in earlier 2 year
steady use at high dose taken alone (90mg).
My 2 main docs for Nardil have not been concerned, just
for me to seek out medical assistance if suspecting anything.
Of course I have never had anything close to hypertensive crisis.
I bet you'd have a hard time finding anyone who did!

Nimodipine is known to be a clacium-channel blocker. I have never seen it ascribed pro-cholinergic properties. Is this new?
