prozac /xanax

Posted by cjay on September 29, 2001, at 12:18:38

Does anyone have any feedback on the prozac and xanax combination?
I was diagnosed with major depression and anxiety, major fatigue being the most dominant.
Everything I am reading here leads me to think most people are taking the xanax for insomnia.
Prozac is the third med I have tried, effexor xr and celexa being the first two. I still have no motivation great fatigue and I seem to zone out.
I have been off work for a year and the pressure is on me to get back but I just don't know HOW I CAN!!
Any help would be appreciated.

Fatique and lack of motivation were two of the symptoms that brought me back to see a pdoc after many years on Prozac, using Xanax and benedryl for sleep. I had the most amazing response the very day after my first 2.5mg dose of Zyprexa and would be on it still, if it didn't cause the most insatiable apppetite and cravings! I have JUST started Goeden and hope it works. My point here is that I never felt better than when I was on Zyprexa and it you can tolerate the over-eating, it might be just the thing for you. I was prescribed depakote, seroquel, and prozac
for symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. Prozac and paxil didn't help much. Depakote helped a great deal with anxiety but after 6 months I felt "over-loaded" - sedated all the time. Seroquel was a blessing for me, though. I went to bed at night, slept well all night long, and got up in the morning when I was supposed to, without feeling drowsy. For long-term insomnia I would think seroquel would be preferable to a benzo like xanax...maybe something like klonipin (sp?)PRN to help you sleep until the seroquel kicks in (it takes a few weeks).
Good luck-
Gracie

Just found your post and was wondering if you're still on combination of Prozac and Xanax. Reason I ask is that my pdoc wants me to add Xanax to Prozac.

Thanks,Karen

Hey Karen!
I tried five antidepressants and a lot of other meds before Prozac, and when i did, I found it to be more effective than any of the others up to that point. I was also prescribed 1mg of Xanax four times a day, and rather than make me tired, I thought it really calmed all my peripheral energy and helped me conserve it for things I really needed to do. I also saw a mood and anxiety disorder specialist who didn't think I should take Xanax because it could induce mood cycling in bipolar. Compared to Klonopin and, to some extent, Ativan, Xanax definitely has a better effect on my mood. I never took Xanax for insomnia, though. It's too short-acting; it would wear off halfway through the night.
What dose of Prozac are you on? For more than a year, I was on 20mg; then, within a few months, my pdoc ramped up the dose to 60mg. My energy was much better, but it might be that the Prozac pushed me into mania.
If you're looking for an antidepressant to help with the fatigue, maybe you should try Wellbutrin. At the highest doses (around 450mg), it helped give me energy and improve my concentration.
