performance anxiety and beta blockers

Posted by Larry O on September 28, 2001, at 21:29:08

I have a major performance anxiety problem, and would like to see if beta blockers could help me. But every time I call a psychiatrist, I am told it will take a lot of time and a lot of money before they can discuss any kind of medication. I know a lot of musicians use beta blockers regularly without all of this expense. What am I doing wrong?

i was put on a bata blocker called inderal (propranol) for anxiety! it has worked wonders for me! they give it also to actors for stage fright!
it is also used for high blood pressure and heart problems so dr.s may not give it out so freely as mine did.
but it is worth a try..even your own family dr. can prescribe it..tell them you heard how wonderful it helps with anxiety and that you would like at least to try it.
i only take 20 mgs...it is soo relaxing and i never have had side effects from it.
the way it works for me is, it just slowly that you don't even notice it, takes the edge off the anxiety...i have found this my "sanity keeper"...i hope my dr. never takes me off it either..
i take it only as necessary...sometimes i can go for weeks without using it then around PMS time it helps me alot!
hopes this helps!
buspar is for anxiety as well but you have to take it three times a day..a real pain, but worked good for me...also inderal is really cheap!!!
dont ever use klonopin if you lean towards addictions...really baaaad for that!
i took months to get over the addiction i had with thap crap and will never EVER touch it again!

I know atenolol is often prescribed for performance anxiety. I don't perform, but I find 25 mg really helpful for regular anxiety control and don't seem to have any side effects from it. Perhaps your regular doctor could try you out on a beta blocker, or did you already try your regular doctor? If you need to go to a psychiatrist to get it, it seems as though he/she ought to be able to learn enough in an ordinary hour-long initial interview to be able to prescribe for you. Of course that is an expensive appointment - do you have insurance coverage to help you with that? Good luck.
