2nd day of Celexa

Posted by Sebbi on September 27, 2001, at 20:52:19

Hello all :-)

I've been given orders by my doc to try celexa as it will probably help my aggression, anger, avoidence and depression. I fought him on this at first but after 3 incidences this week where I seriously wanted to hurt someone or myself...I am now taking Celexa. I've been very depressed yet being a "trooper" for over a year.

My main concern is I am a drinker who is now on a antidepressant. I drink anywhere from 1-3 cases of pounders a week. My doctor knows this. One thing I have learned in dealing with my doctor is not to lie. :-)

I've also been on ativan for 8 years. He's got the script written to take 1mg in am and pm. I take it whenever I feel like I need it...usually in the evening I'll take 1 or 1/2 a mg for sleep.

I am concerned with my alcohol intake and the effects it may have on the celexa. We're (doc and me) looking for someone for me to talk to, as I have withdrawn from the world in the last 2 years. Finding someone acceptable in my small town and with my insurance is hard if not impossible.

Privacy is a big issue.
Basically I have to use someone within our system. (I work for a health system..lucky me. ;-) )

I'm afraid much of the time, avoid the rest of the time and am incredibly confrontational and angry in the remainder.

But.. I am very pleased to meet you.
:-)

Sebbi - just babbling. It helps

Hi Sebbi,

According to the Celexa monograph (which I found on www.rxlist.com), Celexa didn't potentiate (exaggerate) the effects of alcohol in clinical trials, but "alcohol intolerance" is listed as an infrequent side-effect. You probably don't have anything to worry about. Hopefully some people with real-world experience with Celexa will respond to your question; their experiences may not jive with the official info.

Of course, heavy drinking and depression are not a good mix. And you don't need me to moralize to you about the health detriments of heavy drinking even in the absence of depression (though they do seem to go hand-in-hand). We're here to share information and give support.

I hope Celexa helps you get your life back.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks for the info PM :-)

I'm assuming "alochol intolerance" means that I won't like it as much because of it making me ill while taking Celexa? That wouldn't be a bad thing since my drinking is one major area in my life that upsets me.

Today the doc called and said they found someone for me to talk to. I _did_ call and make an appointment..the earliest I could get since I don't want to give myself time to chicken out. Next Thursday is my day to hopefully start making things better.

I'm really trying to police my drinking. Working later in the day has helped. My job is the one place I feel safe. Weekends are the worst. An unusual thing, I should think. :-)

So far I've not had any type of side effect from the celexa. Yay!

A part of me cannot believe I am finally going to see a doctor to talk. Never, ever did I think I would! But then I never thought I'd be promising _my doctor_ to stay on a pill. I thought promises were only met for mothers and clergy. ;-)

I suppose tho'..I've nothing to lose.

Cheers!
Seb
