What undergrad degree is recommended for psychiatr

Posted by 3 Beer Effect on September 26, 2001, at 1:20:31

I am about to graduate, but recently started doing extensive reading about psychopharmacology recently since I started taking an anti-depressant & have found that I like psychiatry much better than my current major of government/geography dual major. So I am thinking about getting a 3rd undergraduate degree, & then going to medical school to become a psychiatrist. What undergraduate degree do medical schools look for for psychiatry?-- I would think psychology, being in the liberal arts, is too lightweight a degree for medical school. I am interested more in psychpharmacology- I am somewhat skeptical of therapists/psychologists and of therapy without medication for moderate to severe depression. Biochemistry? Pharmacy? Biology? Chemistry?

To get into med. school for any specialty- including psychiatry (you don't specialize until several years into the process) - you need a B.A. or B.S. with the pre-med requirements - this is what they were when I was in school, but it's been 5 years, so check to be sure. Also, there are some post-bac pre-med programs for people with bachelor's degrees who don't have the pre-med requirements.

you'll also have to take a VERY long test called the MCAT.

I think they're all two semesters each:

English
Biology
Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Physics
Math

As a recent college grad who did the pre-requisites for pre-med and got in to med school (but decided to do the Peace Corps instead) I can tell you from experience that there is not a particular major that med schools look for and to set yourself apart, it is actually better to have a non science major *IF* you have done well in your pre-med courses and done well on the MCAT.

That said, I was a neuroscience major, which is a major that may help you think through your decision to pursue psychiatry.

Good Luck!
