Nervous about mix of drugs-HELP!

Posted by anna on July 28, 2001, at 20:17:21

O.K. I do trust my doctor, but I am a bit paranoid and would love to hear about any success from anyone on specifically these 2 meds: Wellbutrin in combo with Geodon(just started it yesterday) I have been treated for anxiety and post partum depression and now my doctor says I am bi-polarII. I am in out patient therapy right now due to rapid cycling(?) I am all so new to this. I just got off of effexor, it made me worse.
I also take topomax 100 mg, Klonopin 1 mg bid as needed, Xanax 1-2 mg or less as needed for sleep or panic attacks. Thanks for any feedback. Anna

The Wellbutrin may get rid of some of the intrinsic sedation some people get on Geodon.
I never noticed any sexual dysfunction on Geodon, but that is a possibility, and Wellbutrin may relieve that too.

Wellbutrin SR will have less of the insomnia, tremor, or agitation of Wellbutrin IR, though.

Anna, I started a separate thread below about bi-polar II. But I am curious why you are taking both klonopin and xanax as prns. I know xanax kicks in faster, but when would you decide to use klonopin vs xanax for a prn? Also related to my question in the thread below, what are you cycling: depression with anxiety/panic or depression with hypomania? I guess the later, because of your diagnosis.

Sorry, no answers for you about geodon, but I know in general the atypical anti-psychotics can help slow down and organize your thinking. (At least that's what people have said on this board). Topomax is a mood stabilizer, helping both bi-polar and also used as an adjunct to an AP for major depression. Wellbutrin doesn't have the same side effect profile as the SRRIs, generally no weight gain and no sexual dysfunction.

Hi Shelli, Thanks for responding. Actually I have panic disorder also. I guess he based my diagnosis on the fact that I have had several hypomanic episodes this year but after my son weaned from breastfeeding I got really bad depressed (I was already on Wellbutrin) so he added effexor and I crashed down even worse, and my anxiety got worse. I was hard to diagnose but he has been dealing with me for years and this runs in my immediate family unfortunately (my Dad). The past 3 weeks I would not do anything but sleep and would not do for the children, had no motivation and was borderline suicidal, although I would never follow through. I am in out-patient therapy and they have been giving me tests and therapy.
I am on klonopin for anxiety, which I have been having daily lately. Xanax is only for panic attacks which have gotten better since I got off effexor. He also wants me to use this for sleep until he gets my meds regulated. Sorry so long I hope this has made you understand better. I am still new to this and still there is a lot I don't understand, that is why I am here! :)
