Stimulants for use against sexual dysfunction?

Posted by Thrud on June 16, 2001, at 0:33:57

Hi all.

Has anyone actually used stimulants to combat sexual dysfunction caused by ADs?
Did they work? What side effects could I expect? I seem to get sexual dysfunction from every AD. I am on Remeron at the moment and it is a very good AD, but kills my sex drive/erection/orgasm.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks Sal.

I guess these are the three stimulants to zero-in on. I'll talk to my pdoc about them (and I hope they work!)
Do you know what side effects I could expect from these?

Thanks again.

Insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, tremor--those types of side-effects

Hi Thrud,

I've been trying Dexedrine (Spansule) to combat extreme lethargy and sexual dysfunction. I'm currently tapering off it because it had an extreme paradoxical effect on me. Every time I increased the dose, I seemed to be more slowed down - by the time I got to 30mg daily I felt like I was welded to the couch. On the up side, I wasn't jiggling my foot anymore! It also dropped me even deeper into the Black Hole of depression - enough so that my therapist called my home after I left my appointment last week with a request to call her machine in the evening saying I was OK. It didn't help with the sexual dysfunction either, but that may have been due to the deepening depression and concurrent lack of interest.

I'm now back to feeling pretty much like I did before trying it - I have one 10mg cap to take tomorrow, and then I'm done. I opted to taper rather than stop abruptly to avoid any risk of withdrawal-induced depression.

I'm sure this is just some weird thing with me - after taking Fiorinal-C a few times several years ago for migraine, it started to have an agitating, stimulant effect, rather than a sedating effect. I must have really odd biochemistry! I haven't tried methylphenidate or Pemoline, so can't comment on them.

As far as I know, this is not a usual reaction to Dexedrine, and I'm sure your mileage will vary, but I just thought I'd let you know what happened with me.

Hmmmmm. Anxiety is generally more of a problem for me than depression. Maybe I should try Buspar first?

Hi Nance.

Thanks very much for sharing your experience. I totally understand what you are going through by having an atypical reaction to a drug. I get that all the time with regards to sexual dysfunction, insomnia etc. I am sorry to hear that your sedation and sexual dysfunction wasn't successfully treated: it sounds exactly like me for four years on (side)Effexor. I hope stimulants work for me; I've been celibate for 10 years thanks to ADs.
Best of luck for you.

That sounds like a good idea: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Buspirone-for-anxiety.html
